Char-Broil Cast Iron Smoker Box - 4184804P06

Ours is finally cracking and ready to be replaced. But for four years we have enjoyed the amazing flavor that imparting smoke into burgers, pizzas, chicken and more does. Nothing lasts forever but this had a great run and in about to order another.

This is a sturdy and well-made item that certainly does the job intended. I would like to address an issue raised by other reviewers that frankly, rather surprised me, especially coming from presumably experienced cookers. That is, the issue of a cast-iron cooking utensil rusting if it gets wet. Yes, they do rust, as everything iron does, and heat accelerates this process. Unless you season the box like you would a cast-iron skillets. Coat the smoke box with oil, and you can do this either as a separate process or with its first use, and heat it for twenty minutes or so at high heat. The oil binds with the iron in a process called polymerization. Repeat the next couple of times you cook, and you have a well-seasoned cast-iron utensil that will never rust.This item will probably last forever. I have cast-iron skillets that have been in my family for at least a hundred years. I see I reason to doubt the immortality of this smokebox.

The media could not be loaded. Used this to smoke a Turkey in a Weber gas grill and set it right on the flavor bars. Great food result. Smaller size than I expected but this product worked very well except for the damage sustained during shipment. A chunk of cast iron was broken from the side wall and laying inside the container. Based on multiple other reviews, Amazon is responsible for this damage as they ship these heavy cast iron boxes in a plastic bag despite ongoing damage complaints. This is not a Char-Broil product problem. I will source one at a local shop when I buy a second one. Hey Amazon, do the right thing here. Fix your process.

Great for wood chips and pellets. Tons of smoke for around an hour with chips. Only wish they made a larger model to hold chunks for longer smokes.

This makes adding smoke to the grill simple and easy. No mess no fuss. However, I found that it took up too much space inside the grill, whether directly on the coals or on the cooking grate in the 22 inch Weber Kettle. I saved it for the rare times we use the larger propane grill. On that it works great. Sits right on top of the flavorizer bars in the Weber gas grill. I went back to my time tested method for the Kettle. Putting the wood chips in aluminum foil, closing the foil long and slender and putting it directly on the edge of the burning coals

I bought this for a gift for my dad. I bought one many years ago for myself. It works well, I think probably better than some thin metal ones. It does get cruddy, so unless you plan to clean it regularly with a steel brush it won't retain its original appear for too long. But it is heavy duty and I really pretty its lid that simply sit of the top to be easily removed. Some of the other kinds are hinged and I think a bit of a bother. My smoker box finally rusted out after many years of regular use. You can expect that of almost anything.

This is a great buy. When you can purchase a cast iron smoker box that will last for years. Compared to the tin and aluminum boxes that last a season, if that long. Then to top it off, you get 2 bags of chips.
