Well-made and good looking, though smaller than expected
Overall, this is a good messenger bag. I'll start with the fact that it looks nice. The quality appears high. The stitching seems sounds and it is definitely waxed cotton. It is just smaller than expected. So, it's great for a laptop, ipad, text book, and note pad but it won't fit much more than that. As in, don't expect room for all the stuff I listed and a lunch bag or even a sandwich. Also, by laptop, I mean a MacBook Air 15", which is pretty slim. The water bottle pockets are small and I use it for a tapered 20 oz. bottle I have but it's not 1-liter-Nalgene-bottle sized and most Yeti or Hydro Flask bottles aren't going to fit. The little 16 oz ubiquitous, disposable water bottles will fit.So, just buy with open eyes; know what you're getting into. Other than being a little smaller than expected, it's a good back and should serve well. Only time will tell how durable it is.

It's well made and will last for many years.
This waxed canvas laptop bag is perfect and matches my waxed canvas backpack. It's well made and will last for many years. I modified mine a bit. I added patches, remove the leather straps and put them on the back for a luggage strap. I added a handle on the top and brass gun-metal snaps on the pockets.

Not bad, but some missed opportunities
**UPDATE AFTER A WEEK OF USE**I wrote the original text below after only having this bag a day, and I feel after a week of use I should update it to better reflect my experiences. This is a great bag, and the more I use it the more I don't miss having the outer pockets. My old bag had an outer pocket where I would shove my hat and sunglasses after sundown, but that took only a few days to get over. The truth is, the 2 side pockets under the front flap are huge, with plenty of room to hold the things I need, and the access is quick; just lift the flap and its there.I don't understand the other reviews that complain this bag is small. It's a messenger bag, I don't think they're supposed to go on a hike or camping. They're meant for commuting and such. I am able to hold everything I need with room to spare, as the center compartment is designed to expand. I carry a few folders with papers, a 12" iPad, my wallet, a charging brick and cable, business cards, a pen, and some bandannas in the center section, in addition to my bento lunch box. At the end of the day, my hat and sunglasses can be comfortably stuffed in there with everything else and there is still plenty of room left.I also ordered a replacement strap in the same dark brown color that has the swivel hooks to prevent the strap from getting tangled on itself. The great news about that is I was able to use the original padded shoulder strap that came with the bag with this new strap. It looks like it belongs with the bag now.**END UPDATE**I got the brown one with the top carry handle and dual buckle straps. I really needed the carry handle, but I think the features of the models without the handle are just a tad better. This is a good bag and the perfect size for me. I don’t need to carry much, but I do wish this bag had more pockets, specifically on the outside. A rear zipper pouch or even an open pocket would have been much more useful than the baggage strap, which I don’t ever see myself needing. A small zipper pouch similar to the inside pouch, would have also been great on the front flap, in between the two straps.I like the two side pockets, they are the perfect size for my mini umbrella, transit card, ear buds, etc. I use a liter water bottle and that won’t fit in the side pockets, but I don’t normally carry my water like that so it doesn’t bother me. It’s more important that I can carry my essentials in those quick access pockets. My biggest gripe however, is the shoulder strap is terribly designed. It gets twisted up constantly, and I have to de-tangle it all the time. This could have been fixed by using a strap with those that swivel to attach to the rings, but instead the strap is woven through the rings and doesn’t self correct itself. I may cut this strap off and use a different one that has a swivel clip, as I can see already that this tangle mess will annoy me to no end.All in all, I do like this bag, and I would recommend it.

Very nice
Great quality for a $25 bag. Stock wax was very subtle and basically zero water proof capability so I applied extra layers of wax at the front, now It looks even better. It also holds everything I need to office. Great bag overall.

Great for the price
After looking at options from Orvis and Filson and seeing the prices associated with those (I'm a cheapskate but appreciate quality - or as they say, I've got champagne tastes on a beer budget), I decided to see what else might be available in that vein. I was skeptical that a $40 briefcase (that's what I use it for) would deliver. I've only had it for about a week, but first impressions have been great! As one reviewer noted, it may not technically be "waxed" cotton (perhaps it's more like Scotchgard), but it is a very nice thick canvas-type material, the leather is nice and thick, and the magnets seem to do a good job holding the cover in place. Not sure how people lost the magnets - they look VERY solidly attached. Size is right for my 13" x 9" laptop (much bigger and you'd have an issue), and overall appearance is in line with the images. I look forward to breaking this in and taking it on business trips going forward - much better than my previous generic black nylon bag.

Unfortunate zipper placement
Overall, sturdy and relatively well constructed. Laptop fits quite nicely. I also really love the magnetic closures. My only criticisms are: There’s a pocket with a zipper INSIDE the sleeve area for your computer. A sturdy, sharp edged metal zipper. I hadn’t planned on buying a case/shell but I either have to or remove that zipper if I don’t want my computer to get all scratched up. The MFR should have recognized that as a fairly serious design flaw and either used a rubber handled zipper, a leather pull or better yet, just skip that pocket position all together. The other more minor issue is the placement of the handle. It’s in the middle of the backside instead of on top. Makes it a bit awkward for carrying without the shoulder strap. Think I’m going to yank that off and re-sew it in the right spot. Apart from having to hack fix these two issues, it’s a decent bag. Without the zipper issue, this bag is a solid 4-5 star product.
