The big thing about these is that they are small, and offer easy DCC programming for just-plug lights. NCE makes a cheaper, smaller model if you are willing to solder and want to add programmable lighting to locomotives or cars, but this is great for being modular and removable for situations where you want to test something on your layout before the committing to soldering. Some random settings are great for buildings to simulate residents turning lights on or off, but unfortunately there is no artificial firelight setting good for fireplaces or steam loco fireboxes. Best to use the fast random on 2-3 of the plugs with different LEDs to get that effect. Great for signals and good that it has a mode to blend in with your loco's channel such that you can program them to on/off alongside functions on the loco. Would love a keep-alive included model for those applications though.Worth trying some if you already use NCE stuff and the woodland scenics lights, more power to customize at the same cost as the just plug sequencing hubs.
