Why the plastic packaging?
Well made little tea set, a little disappointed that the jug & tea-pot have no working spout.More disappointed that we bought a wooden set that is packed in rigid plastic, totally unnecessary especially given the sturdy quality of the contents. Re-pack with rigid board & put a spout in the jug & teapot & i'd give you 5 stars.Update Feb 2020 - tea set doesn't like water. We always fill a the sink in our grand-daughters play kitchen with warm water as she likes to "wash up", but after only a few times doing this the paint is starting to separate from the wood rendering the cups etc un-useable. Shame.

Poor quality for the price tag.
Very disappointed. Poorly constructed for the price and the card was different from the advertised card (that stated tea options written). The one provided had adstract pictures that didn’t relate to tea?The spoon had splinters all over (not suitable for children) and glue was oozing out of joints in several places. Paint was poor quality and chipped in places. I’ll be returning it for a replacement.

Questionable quality
There are cheaper options available for wooden toddler tea sets, but I figured I'd pay a little more for quality and durability. Plus this set was slightly cheaper here.I have to say, I'm not massively impressed. There are gaps around the joins, where the handles, spouts, etc, aren't an exact fit. There are also big blobs of glue around all the joins. The images are also misleading. The spoons in our set weren't proper timber and didn't have any kind of carving. They were just flat bits of CNC'd plywood, vaguely shaped like spoons.there are also differences to the tea bag set.The set also doesn't include a tray/mat (that is cardboard packaging) Granted, a tray isn't on the parts list, but the picture does give that impression at a glance. A wooden tray would be a nice addition to this set.It would be good if they updated their images to reflect the content changes. I would have gone with a different set, had i known the set wasn't quite like the one pictured.Given the current threat of climate crisis and deepening concerns about plastic in our oceans, does this item really need so much plastic packaging? So many other toy companies are switching to printed boxes without product windows and inset traysAll that being said, the set (besides the glue) is cute, and nicely painted (printed), and my daughter enjoys it, which is the main thing really. It is just a shame you don't get quite what is advertised here, and the quality control is lacking.

Not functional for water play
Pros: chunky, solid and nice colours.Cons: Can't put water in them at all. On any contact with water they split apart and the paint flecks off. It is very disappointing as I have always found kids want to put their water/ squash in it when pretending.Overall: I wanted to get a set they could actually play with. This one has not lasted and is bordering on dangerous (due to large splinters of wood coming off). Very disappointed.

Poorly made
I bought this as it was on sale, and I've always thought Melissa & Doug wooden toys are always sturdy, safe, and trustworthy. However, within a few days of play, the spatula got faulty. The wood split up and I thought that is no longer safe for my toddler anymore as there might be a splinter. I got a replacement from Amazon after that, and yet again the product came faulty. It was defected as the 'new' spatula did not come with a smoothened wood and from how I see it, it will split up again. Very disappointed as I really liked this cake mixer.
