D-Mannose 500mg 120 Capsules (Pack of 2)

I have actually been giving this to my dog, at the recommendation of my vet. However, the principle of operation is the same in dogs and in people -- your body does not absorb much of this compound; most of it goes to the kidneys and then bladder to be excreted (usually less than an hour after ingestion). While in the urinary tract, D-mannose binds to bacteria that might otherwise cause a UTI. (In case you didn't know, D-mannose is abundant in cranberries and is likely the primary reason cranberry juice is so effective against UTIs.)As background, my dog has inflammatory bowel disease. She is on prednisone to control this condition. Prednisone causes two problems related to UTIs, though -- it suppresses the immune system, making it more difficult for the body to fight back against infection, and it causes one to drink a good deal more water than normal, which leads to dilute urine (concentrated urine is less likely to have significant bacterial presence). Last year, my dog started urinating blood. We did repeated rounds of testing at the vet, to the tune of probably a thousand dollars (ultrasounds, urine cultures, etc., over and over again). She had E. coli and an Enterococcus species in her urine so we put her on cefpodoxime, which she has been on nearly constantly for 4-5 months. (We would take her off and, invariably, she'd start having trouble again.)Anyway, after the last round of antibiotics was prescribed, the vet suggested D-mannose. While there are cranberry supplements for dogs, most of them have flavors to make them more palatable and my dog can't have that due to her inflammatory bowel disease. So, I ordered this one for humans. I am using the human dosage of 3 pills per day and she has been on this for about 40 days at this point. (My dog is an 84-pound Rottweiler, for reference. If you have a smaller dog, you may want to alter the amount.) Her last round of antibiotics ran out a week and a half ago and she is actually doing all right for the first time in a long time. (Normally she would have relapsed by now. Since this D-mannose is the only difference, I have to think it's responsible for the improvement.)This comes in fairly large capsules. They're vegetarian if that's of concern to you. Because most D-mannose is excreted unchanged via the urinary tract, this is not a time-release product and if you'd prefer to remove the powder from the capsules, it should still work.Anyway, I'm very happy that my dog can go off her antibiotics now. This is much less expensive and better for her liver and kidneys! And I would totally use this myself if I ever get a UTI.

Works great to maintain a healthy bladder!

I couldn't believe it, but this actually works. Like others have said, the dose is Important.I used to have reoccurring UTI's and one time the antibiotics I was taking were NOT clearing up the infection. I had bought these D-Mannose pills and tried one or two but felt no relief, so I thought they were useless. But after I completed my course of antibiotics, I was still laying on my bed crying in pain- the antibiotics had done NOTHING to improve my condition. In sheer desperation I downed 7 of these D-Mannose pills, waited a hour, and then drank 16 oz of water. I waited about 5 more hours and took another 7 pills. The next morning I woke up and my infection was GONE. I couldn't believe it. These are miracle pills, especially for people with reoccurring UTI's. OR- for anyone who has a one-time UTI but doesn't want to take antibiotics. Just make sure that if you already have a UTI, you take enough to get ALL the bacteria out. One or two pills might not be enough, depending on how severe your infection is.Now, every time I feel that twinge that lets me know I'm getting a UTI, I just take about 2-3 pills and it stops the infection in its tracks. I wish more people knew about these pills because UTI's are so awful to experience!!! I've heard about people drinking cranberry juice, but you have to drink so much, it could be really upsetting for your stomach. This is a really easy way to stop the problem.

Works as expected

I suffer from recurrent UTI's so I keep a steady supply on this to take on a daily basis. Before I had this on hand I felt a UTI coming, I ordered some of these but by the time I got them the condition had worsened, I tried to take an abundance of these to cure me, but I was too late. However I still take this daily and my infection hasn't returned. They are a bit on the pricey side, but a definite must for urinary infections.
