Wish I'd just bought this earlier...
This is my 5th telescope, and I could have saved some time, expense, and headache by simply starting here. I also have an 8" Dob and had and sold an 8" goto SCT, plus a couple smaller guys. The dirty little secret of visual astronomy is that there are really only 7-8 real showpiece amazing sights to behold, beyond that and you're splitting double stars (cool the first few times) and averting vision to see faint fuzzies.Having come to this realization a few years into the hobby, I realized that a 4" (102mm) Mak on a highly portable goto mount is the sweet spot for portability (means I'll use it more often) and adequate light gathering for solar system and the bright few globular clusters and nebulae. I might not buy another telescope again (I know, famous last words) as this + my 8" dob gives me lots of flexibility. If I only could have one, I think this is it, because of the portability of the Mak and light weight goto.To power this I don't use AAs but rather bought a $26 Talentcell 12v lithium battery pack and I have no idea how long it lasts - over 18h and few signs of wearing out. I just velcroed it to the goto base.A Mak is a jack of all trades and a mid-sized Mak (102mm) has really excellent tradeoffs. A 5" is surely better, not sure it has the price-performance quotient though.

Buena montura

Compact and robust go-to mount
Scope and mount package works great. Go-to is spot-on and mount is robust so there's very little vibrations when focusing

A great travel or starter scope package.
I've been an amateur astronomer for several years now. This is my 4th telescope, and I'm pretty happy with it. The tripod and mount are great. I like how the motorized mount uses an app (something I was initially weary of); it actually simplifies and speeds up the alignment process. The OTA (the telescope itself) is a decent performer, but it's optics are better for brighter objects like planets and not so great for deep-sky objects like nebulae (It has a rather narrow field of view). I think it would be a great scope for a beginner or someone who primarily will be looking at planets and the moon. I'll likely upgrade this OTA soon to something that observes nebulae and clusters better, as those are my favorite viewing objects. I'm primarily using this as my "travel scope", as the whole thing (except for tripod) can fit in a small case, and you could probably even find a smaller tripod if you looked around enough!
