I'm a Frog!-An Elephant and Piggie Book

Elephant and Piggie are favorites in our house!
My son, age 4, is not the most enthusiastic when it comes to reading. (Or anything else that involves sitting still.) But he ADORES Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books. I'm a Frog! was no exception. When I pulled it out of the box, I sat down to read the book to myself. Around here, that's a sure-fire way to get my son's attention. He ran over to me and peeked at the colorful cover. When he saw Piggie smiling on the front, he snuggled up to me and asked me to read it to him right away! Of course I did, and he giggled his way through the book as I read it aloud. Piggie's cheerful enthusiasm + Gerald's anxiety always make for a very funny mix. You can think of them as an odd couple for the preschool set.I'm a Frog! focused on the power and joy of imagination. What little kid doesn't love to play pretend? Kids can make an instant connection to the characters and their actions. The illustrations are wonderfully done; they're colorful and cute, and add a lot of depth to the story. On each page, Piggie's and Gerald's faces are delightfully expressive. Pre-readers get a lot of cues about the story simply by reading their faces! The storyline is easy for a child to follow, written in the speech-bubble style of Willems' other Elephant and Piggie books. (I love that the speech bubbles are color-coded, so even my non-reading son can clearly follow along with which character speaks on each page.)All in all, this is a terrific book, and it will be re-read often here in our home. Another winner from Mo Willems.

My 6 year old's favorite author and book series.
My 1st grade / 6.5 year old daughter LOVES Elephant and Piggie books. They are by far her favorite, and when this one arrived in the mail, she literally screamed with joy and excitement. She rushed off to her room to read it immediately. My 9 year old was jealous, and got a turn reading it after her little sister was finished. The little one isn't reading a lot by herself yet, but she will try harder to read the E&P books than with any other book, ever. And the great part is that she can usually figure out most of the words, and there are only a few words in each book that I will have to tell her what they are. The color coded speech boxes really help kids figure out who is speaking as well (as if the drawings don't do that well enough--they DO!). The pictures are also cute and funny, so kids get and stay engaged.I would definitely recommend these books for kids 3-10. There is enough repetition that kids feel confident about reading it, but not so much that it feels babyish. In fact, the repetition is quite artful and I think it encourages kids to keep trying without being patronizing. If you are hoping your child will read it themselves, if they know the list of 100 sight words, or can sound out most 3-4 letter words, they will at least be able to "help" read and may be able to read the majority of the book. My 6 year old and I like to each be one of the characters (I'm usually Gerald).

You don't have to PRE-TEND to love this book!
My sons started reading with Mo Willems and at ages 7 and 9, they still love his books. It doesn't matter that they're above the reading level for them, they simply love Piggie and Gerald, and so do I. This book is absolutely wonderful and the only thing I will add to all the other reviews is that as part of a a home school group, I teach a class about inventions, particularly encouraging using imagination to create anything or do anything my students want to do. I read this book to my class as a warm-up to an imagination exercise. THEY LOVED IT and laughed for several minutes at they end, trading "MOOOOOOS" back and forth. Did I mention the age range of the kids? It's 8-12, and the parent of an eleven year old came back after class to ask me the name of the book because her son wanted it!Mo Willems' appeal goes far beyond his intended audience, and this book especially resonates with everyone. Mo Willems for president!

My new favorite!
My students (1st and 2nd graders) LOVE this book! It might be one of our new favorites. A student brought it in, and he and I read it to the class together. They have been begging me to read more Elephant and Piggie books. But the best thing about this book and others from this series is that it motivates even my most struggling, reluctant readers to read. They love Mo Willems' funny and interesting stories which are told in pictures and text that is simple enough for them to access. Their frequent rereadings help reinforce their sight word knowledge, increase their confidence and make them want to read more - ultimately helping them learn how to read. Even my strongest readers want to read them over and over again.

Too cute!
Bought this book for my 12 year old autistic son who loves pigs. He loves the book and it's a quick read so I can read it or help him read it before he grows impatient.

Fun for the whole family!
This is absolutely one of our favorite Mo Willems Elephant & Piggie books. Our 3 year old is working on reading and she knows this book inside and out - making up her own lines as she goes. It's quite a treat to listen to her reading "I'm a Frog". We especially love the banter in the middle between Gerald and Piggie. It makes for entertaining nighttime reading, whether you are reading aloud alone or with a partner. Mo Willems has once again nailed his Elephant & Piggie series book. More, More, More we say!
