Excellent book for college students and scholars
An excellent study. I use in my Islam in America course and students love it. Each semester, they even plan and hold a mock academic conference on this book. IT IS THAT GOOD. Dr Chan-Malik writes in an accessible but academic style that is super engaging. She is a wonderful scholar and many of us in Islamic Studies and other fields are thankful for this study.

Excellent study on Muslim women’s identities in the American context
Chan-Malik provides an excellent study of the construction and deployment of Muslim women’s identities in the American context. She delivers nuanced and insightful analysis of several episodes in a more recent history of US Black Muslim women and women of color Muslims. Chan-Malik's approach, situated in cultural and ethnic studies, adds an additional layer of value for Islamic studies as a field of study. It can only be hoped other scholars will follow her lead both in the subjects of their studies and the rich array of sources they consult. Highly recommended

Excellent for teaching and scholarship!
This is an excellent book for classrooms and for targeting the specific history of Muslim women of color in the United States. Chan-Malik’s writing is so accessible for the public or undergraduates. She offers clear examples of the intersections of race, gender, and religion in the US. Chapters work on their own for teaching and the whole book is a worthy read for Islamic studies scholars and scholars of race in America.

Overlooked US History about religion and women of color!
This amazing book tells the under-examined stories of Muslim women of color in the United States from 1920 until today. I absolutely loved looking at this fascinating piece of United States history. The archival photographs alone are quite enchanting. If you enjoy reading under-appreciated or misunderstood stories in history and religion, Dr. Chan-Malik did a great job on this book. Highly recommended. As you can see in my image, it's very annotation-worthy.
