An awesome investment
After moving into a new efficiency that did not have a kitchen/stove, I needed an alternative, small, and affordable solution. So I looked online, found this "portable" stove, and I am VERY pleased with it.PROS:- I used it to cook rice, boil vegetables, make tea, etc. I've boiled a pot of water with up to 4 cups of water, and it works great. Bring it to a boil quickly. Food comes out as any other normal stove top would produce.- Sturdy design, easy functionality.CONS:- The only con would be the knobs for adjusting the heat. Sometimes, it's a bit difficult to tell how hot exactly you've set the knobs to. It's not a big deal, and after a few uses you get an idea of where the knob's position is to determine what heat level.

Great unit for my boat
I purchased this unit for my boat after using one that had the solid burners - they took too long to warm up and too long to cool off. I started looking for a unit with coil elements and found this one. It's light weight and made with stainless material. I had read some comments about one of the burners not getting as hot as the other, and that is true, but not by much. I was able to boil water on both of them at the same time.

Nice burner
Ordered this burner anticipating power outage/s during recent hurricane Irene. After reading many reviews related to other, similar burners on Amazon, I selected this unit because of good price & simplicity. Used it straight with my Honda 2KW portable gas generator(no other devices) but your milage may vary based on your power source. At first time use, the coils gave out a little smoke temporarily but, I think that's supposed to be normal. The unit is not heavy but has a sturdy feeling base, good for mid size pots/pans (I used pots similar in diameter to the coils). The unit's size felt just right with enough spacing between the coils. The coils seem well supported. The brushed steel finish looks nice and the overall finish/quality is very good. The hot side coil becomes red hot at full setting and I was able to cook/boil as needed. The adjustment dial/s worked well. The 2nd. coil (as mentioned in specifications) is for warm/low settings only and seemed to work as described. I did not feel the coils cycling on/off automatically as mentioned in some other, comparable burner's reviews on Amazon. Unit's power cord didn't feel robust/long but worked just fine. A few hours of cooking time have not really shown any flaws. As I don't plan to use it everyday, I can't comment on long term life/performance right now. I have not yet tested it with standard, household power but I'd assume that it can only work better? Overall I'm pleased with the unit & think it was worth the money, especially for my intended ocassional use.

Don't let the pot boil over
This is the third brand of double burner that I purchased, and they all have the same problem. They work fine until a pot of water boils over. The water runs down inside the case and you get a big flash and a cloud of smoke, and shorted out fried electrics. Even the "flat plate" types have his problem. Can't use induction types because the pots and pans are stainless or other non-magnetic materials. I'd love to see someone make an affordable two burner portable ceramic cooktop. Until then, I'll keep buying cheap single burners and consider them to be disposable.

Perfect Burner
I was staying in a semi-permanent hotel room for research and a conference for 6 weeks. This was a great way of doing home cooking in the event no real stove is available. The burners never failed, but did smoke the first time they were turned on. This is normal, but I wouldn't be eager to inhale the fumes. One burner is a low / medium heat burner while the other has a higher temperature. I never even used the highest temperature settings. The burner was sufficiently hot to cook fish, eggs, pancakes, etc. It even managed to boil 3 qts. of water in about 5-6 minutes, which is as good as any real stove I've ever encountered. After 6 weeks, the burner was still going strong, and I'm keeping it for future camping / conferences. This is one purchase I don't regret and certainly paid for itself over the short period in which I used it. It's worth noting that I used this stove about 2-3 times a day, every day for 6 weeks, and never once had a problem with it.If you're interested in finding a temporary replacement for a stove or are in need of an electric stove, I would recommend this one. I've already told a few friends about this one, and they seem to find it suitable.

not great
It works, but has some serious design flaws. First, the heating elements are not solidly stable, so that they may tilt or unseat. If they become unseated when they are hot, you have to jiggle them back with an oven mitt or something. Second, there is only one on-off switch. This means that when the unit is turned on, both burners are on. Even if you turn one you aren't using down to MIN, it is still warm. If you forget and leave it higher, it's dangerous. Would it have been so hard to put two switches on the thing?

Great Emergency Buy
I recently moved into a building and was surprised to learn that we don't have gas because of a leak. Living in NY and having two gas related explosions one year apart from each other, I'm not opposed to taking precautions and being safe. The management gave us courtesy hot plates and unfortunately, they are incredibly inefficient and it is impossible to even fry an egg on the thing. So I decided to hop on here and buy one of my own.Better Chef was an excellent choice. The high power plate is great for cooking rice, meats and frying in general. The medium plate is not as potent, obviously, but it is still good to have.My favorite part is the handy on/off switch in the middle of the table. It also went great with the black and silver appliance theme I have going on.For the price, it is unbeatable. Highly recommended for emergencies.
