Review: You never knew you needed one until you had one. - This is one of those tools you never knew you needed, until you have one. My wife gave me one of these (different brand) a few years ago. We used to tow a travel trailer and I was always worried the electric brakes would drag, or an axle bearing would fail causing an overheat and blowout. This became an indispensable tool letting me do a quick walk around when we'd stop to make sure all was expected and safe. Once I had one, I was measuring everything. Drafts around doors/windows, campfires, refrigerators, car parts, you name it. The problem was, it was always in the truck or trailer, and never handy in the home when we wanted to check something. I was offered the chance to review this product and jumped at it. I like how the gun, and manual, explain the spot ratio. My old one never did, and while I never expected it to only measure the temperature at the exact spot of the laser, I never knew how big of an area it was measuring. Having it explained is a small thing, but a nice addition. Having it silk screened right on the gun is also nice, cause I know I'll forget. The temp range is sufficient for most normal uses. I've noticed while shopping for a spare, that the price is often related to the range. The less you pay, the less the range from low to high. The display is bright and easy to read, and the buttons well marked, another thing I can't say for my old gun. As other's have stated, it's pretty easy to use, point and "shoot", then read the temp. Review: Can't beat it for the price. Impressive. - Works great, especially given the price. I have no way to verify the accuracy of the device, but at least it is consistent, meaning it gives the same reading on the same spots when you go back a second time. Someone told me that when the technology for these was first invented, the instrument cost $5000. I guess the price has come down with time. Well made. Not a heavy duty feeling, but feels solid enough that it doesn't feel cheap.

A bit inaccurate, but a wonderful tool for everything around the house
While a little inaccurate, it is extremely useful for its intended purpose. I personally have found great use for it when cooking to see what the skillet temperature is before I add food or olive oil. It also came in handy when using my cast iron skillet on my electric cook top as it found several cold spots wherein the pan wasn't heating evenly. A quick turn of the skillet fixed this problem and gave me more confidence that my food would cook evenly. Beyond food, I've used it to find the temperature of the road I walk my dog on in the afternoons to see if it's a little too hot for his feet, and I've also used to see how hot my brake calipers were before I took them off for a brake change. Overall, I'm really enjoying the tool. I use it a few times a week, and it's proven itself useful in every instance.

Its accurate, fast, and Painless
Its accurate, fast, and Painless. We have a Clay Oven at our resort and had been using thermocouples, this is a huge improvement because we can shoot the walls of the oven, which is the key for Clay Ovens. We're using it thoughout the kitchen now. It gives INSTANT results where you had to wait on the conventional probes to equalize on temps. The laser point & backlighting are also very nice.

Horrible for me, maybe good for you.
Horrible! It seems to measure the temperature around the laser not at the same location of the laser. I measured the temperature of a blanket both in the shade and in the direct sunlight, in the shade it was 84 degrees in the bright sun light it was 96 degrees. Then I measured an object in the shade on the blanket and it was 84 degrees, then I moved the same object from the shade to the sun and it was 96 degrees, then back to the shade and it was 84. No way the temperature rose 12 degrees in seconds, and then dropped 12 degrees. It was obvious it was still measuring the temperature of the blanket, even though the laser was on the object. Worthless to me.

Built well, feels good but lacks accuracy
The build quality is surprising good. It feels good in the hand and performs the function of taking a surface temperature. However, it's not too accurate. I tested it my surrounding (cabinets, desk, tile floor, carpet, computers, coffee, tap water, refrigerator and freezer) and found that it varies anywhere from 3-9 degrees depending on material. All temperatures were within reason. The ambient temperature was 68 degrees and the surround material ranged from 64-67. The ultimate test was when I took the tool to work to compare the MeasuPro with a lab thermometer (calibrated every month). It showed that my coffee was 116.7 degrees. When I used the MeasuPro it showed it at 109.1. I then decided to take the cup back to my office and run some further test. When aiming the device at the same coffee cup the bottom of the cup was 75.6 degrees and the top was 96.6. (See pictures - cup is full) That is a 20+ degree swing in temperature just on the cup and when I touch both areas they don't feel 20 degrees off. They perhaps few 2-3 degrees difference, but not 20. The cup is the hard plastic reusable from Starbucks. There is also an audible beep that is pretty loud. The beep occurs when the device is powered on and when you release the trigger. From the user's manual there is no reference to the enable or disable the audible beep, but I have contacted Measupro to verify that's the case.

Great thing
Great product. I've used it to measure the heated air coming from HVAC ducts (one duct is putting out air at a higher temperature than another, both are about equidistant from the furnace), the temperature of a bag containing sub-Q fluids, the temperature of air being exhausted from a laptop by cooling fans. And this was only in the first 48 hours. Follow up: I bought a second Thermometer as a birthday present for an 11-year old grandson who likes this sort of thing.

SCIENCE FICTION FUN IN YOUR KITCHEN
I first saw a thermometer like this being used by Alton Brown on "Good Eats," and thought it was the coolest thing ever, but assumed it would be exorbitantly expensive. But I was amazed to find it's only twenty bucks, for which I get to feel like Buck Rogers every time I use it. And I use it frequently--it's perfect for checking a skillet or grill pan you're heating up, and so much more convenient than conventional candy thermometers for checking the temperature of oil or fat for deep-frying, which is essential to ensure the optimum frying for both taste and health reasons. I absolutely love it.

Did you know that the fur temperature of a King Charles Cavalier....
You will not believe how irritating it is possible to be with this device. I have measured the temperatures of radiators, floors, window sills, the dog, my wifes arm, the dog again after a walk, the dog again after a quick run around the garden, you name it. Did you know the temperature of a King Charles Cavalier goes up by about 1.5 degrees (measuring the surface temperature of its fur on its back) after a walk around the block? You do now. My feet are much warmer than my wifes too. But all men already know this as scientific fact. Women are always cold. This device proves it. That said, I have been able to prove that my wife is nowhere near as cold as she thinks she is, or at least the back of her hands aren't. Our living room radiator has a mystery flat spot too. The floor in the hallway is as cold as I expected it to be and it is amazing how warm the ceiling at the top of the landing is because of heat rising up the stairs. All these joys can be yours.! The area around the trackpad on an Apple Macbook Pro gets to 26.8 degrees too! There is, of course, no use in me knowing this whatsoever but you'll find yourself walking around the house like Captain James T Kirk on a Klingon bird of prey, waiting to zap anything that comes into view. It is unlikely to be an alien but it is very probable that you'll find out the surface temperature of at least 54 items in 20 minutes. It is well made, easy to operate, very cool (not pun intended) and after I'd shown it to 4 of my friends...they all bought one too. Buy it. Have fun. No animals (or wifes) were harmed in the making of this review. If you are horrified at the content of it get a sense of humour and read between the lines.

MeasuPro IRT20 Temperature Gun "You pay your money you take a chance"
I have read poor reviews on this type of product that don't take into account the cost involved. Lets face it if you want a car of Rolls Royce Quality pay the price for a Rolls Royce. This item seems to do exactly what is described and I feel that many of the bad reviews come from people not understanding how to use it correctly. I have tested my gun in fridge and freezer and make the following observations. e.g. I pointed it at a bag of frozen chips and the reading was not correct (I recorded -4 degrees in my freezer that is set at -18 degrees) I removed a chip and then tried a reading on the chip which gave a correct reading of -18. I then tested a joint of meat in the freezer alongside the chips and this read correct at -18. Other readings on packets also gave various incorrect readings. If you simply point the gun in the vague direction of something in a fridge or freezer don't expect to get any accuracy. (I actually had an FSA inspector do this in my house and she couldn't understand the wildly varying reading. Doesn't say much for their training!) The item itself must be chilled to the correct temperature and you will not get it right if the point you pick on the packet is not in contact with the food. Jars and plastic containers can also give false readings possibly through reflection. Testing for heat is also similar. I saw a review of a person who said it did not work on his electric kettle but didn't say if the kettle was actually boiling at the time. If you boil a kettle and then try and read the temperature after it has clicked off then it will read incorrect as the water has already gone off the boil and is cooling down. The only way to test for heat in a liquid is when it is actually in the process of being heated and the heat source is being applied. For me this gun works and I think most people buying one will be like me and only want it to give a reasonable degree of accuracy perhaps to within a couple of degrees. If that is not good enough then go and spend a lot of money on an expensive one and hope it will be more accurate.
