I have been looking for a good book to use to update my style for a little while and this is the first one I have been impressed with. In fact, I have returned a few of late that have just not been up to the task, lazily written and most of all, about me, me, me and not much else. This by contrast is excellantly written and the the author obviously does understand clothing - few people seem to know what a placket is nowadays, for instance. I do, because I made clothes from an early age and went onto study textile design, but once this word would have been in fairly common parlance. I like her tips for finding your own style, reaching my mid sixties (I say this very quietly) as not sure I'm her intended market audience. I should really know my style by now, but this does need to change a bit over time and everyone feels a bit lost during years in which you undergo major change or new roles in life. I have to now learn to dress as a stylish pensioner, not an art lecturer, and to be honest, I've been a bit lost in the woods, despite my background. This is a good reminder that I can still be myself - relaxed but feminine, with a slight edge - and not slip into the fleece and shapeless pants or velcro sandals and flowery dress (for going out). If anything, I would have liked a little more on how to wear different neutrals for different colourings, plus how to dress for different shapes, as this is not always easy to do yourself. But to be honest, I take her point that it might then become very prosciptive in the Trinny and Susannah or Colour Me Beautiful sort of 80s/90s way, and we definately don't want to go there again. I would highly recommend this book to anyone of any age and shape as it contains some of the best information out there, whilst been current in ideas, as well as extremely well written.
