great flashlight
First I bought the R2 and was so impressed I thought I'd go for the R1 as an exemplar of a 16340 battery. There are some interesting and subtle differences from the 14500/AA powered R2. Its about 17mm shorter and about 2mm fatter, explained by the battery dimensions. I already have a 16340 powered Jetbeam Jet-II and although it is excellent quality I dislike the length to diameter ratio. Its a bit short. The R1, due to its adjustable head is a much more comfortable length and the side-switch makes for easier single handed operation than the twisty Jetbeam.Except for a couple of issues explained later this is a great flashlight. Its first great features are single long press to Moonlight or double click to Turbo. Three clicks to Strobe if that is your thing but I'm happy that Strobe is reasonably hidden. Then from any mode (including initial Moonlight or Turbo) press and hold to cycle through Low, Mid and High. It like it that Moonlight and Turbo are not in the sequence. The optics are superb, more hotspot than floody but a larger and more even hotspot than the (orange peel) Jetbeam . Finally on the plus side a well engineered lockout. A 3 second press from Off enters Lockout, then from Lockout a 3 second press enters Moonlight (in the R2 the flashlight enters Low after Lockout). There is a logic to the R1 behaviour though I prefer the R2's Low. The mode spacing is subtly different between R1 and R2. R1 is (0.5) -10 - 60 - 300 - (900) lumens, the R2 is (0.5) - 5- 90 - 300 - (700) lumens. Take your pick. Personally I think the R2 offers marginally more useful mode spacing.A few minor points disappoint me but perhaps not everybody. The product's USP is that is has an adjustable head. With the head angled forward and pocket clip carried facing forwards the clip obstructs the switch. I hope the designer thought long and hard about that but I wonder if the switch and magnetic charging point positions could have been swapped? As it happens I never pocket clip carry, removing the clip is the first thing I do with any flashlight. The next point is a personal issue. I prefer a lanyard attachment to be end-aligned to allow paracord or 2mm cord through a split-ring. I know its possible to design an end-aligned split ring attachment without compromising tail standing (I've already modded my R2). I think the designer missed a trick there. Finally this product is crying out for a diffuser/wand. I can't believe at the price point it wasn't possible to include that. If its a cost issue dump the head strap.I realise my 3 stars is a littler harsh for an almost flawless flashlight but I need to differentiate from the R2 (IMHO 4 stars which takes account of the price-point and lack of diffuser/wand). Anyway, despite the price-point, no regrets. I'm going to keep the R1 in my collection as a 16340 exemplar but the performance is so close to the R2 that in EDC terms there isn't a need for both. The R2 has a huge advantage for EDC, in an emergency it will work with a standard AA, the R1 won't.

Great design but check which colour tint version you're buying
This is a great design for an 'everyday carry' torch, with a lot of versatility. The control system is simple to use, the lighting levels are well-spaced, and the swivel head makes it an angle light, head torch and hand torch all in one. Charge time and light time were both very close to the manufacturer's figures when I tested them. Having both a strong clip and a lanyard is also a plus. One minor niggle is that 'moonlight' mode is not stored in the memory, so if you switch the torch off in 'moonlight' mode and then use a short-press to switch it on again, it will be in 'low'. That's a very minor issue, though, as you can just switch it on with a long-press to get into moonlight mode anyway. A second minor niggle is that, in angle-torch mode, if you want the clip at the back of the torch it covers the switch. That means you can't change levels without moving the clip out of the way and then back again. However, it does mean you can't accidentally switch it off either - which might be an advantage for hands-free use.The beam pattern is good, with a tight bright central spot and a good amount of spill. It's not quite a 180-degree spill, though, so when holding it level the ground at your feet (and maybe a metre or so in front) is in the very faintly-lit periphery, rather than the main spill area. That's not a major issue - how often do you walk along looking right down at your feet anyway? - but I guess could be worth thinking about if you do something like scrambling along mountain ridges in the dark.My major issue - and the reason it doesn't get five stars from me - is that the 'neutral white' light is heavily tinted, to a kind of greenish-brown. I like a slightly warm tint, but this made fresh snow look like dirty slush! That also calls into question its CRI rating, as a tint this heavy will not reproduce colours accurately. I therefore returned it for the other version ('cool white'), which has a pleasant warm tint (i.e. is more like 'neutral white' or 'warm white'). I am happy with the 'cool white' version, but if you like a 'cold' white light then you might find even this tint too 'warm'.TL;DR: Rofis need to work on their colour descriptions (I'd call their 'neutral' more like 'muddy' and their 'cool' more like 'warm'), but the overall quality of the design and build is excellent.

After 5 months very light use, it is not charging the battery anymore !!!
After 5 months of very light use this torch is now not charging the battery. When charging the indicator light remains red all the time, even when left for days at a time. It is very disappointing because otherwise this is a great very versatile little torch. The build quality is great, the twisting head is a great feature and it is light for a metal torch. However if it cannot charge the battery then it is just a paperweight now. I cannot recommend it.
