Product Description John LeTour (Willem Dafoe) is a good man in a bad business, working for Ann (Susan Sarandon) on the wrong side of the law. When Ann decides to close up shop, LeTour has to go straight and discover his own future. But time is running out on him as he must dodge the cops, confront a killer, and find his heart before he can leave his past behind. Willem Dafoe, Susan Sarandon .com This compelling 1992 drama is often cited as the third film in writer-director Paul Schrader's trilogy of "nocturnal alienation" that includes Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver (which Schrader wrote) and American Gigolo. Like those other films, this one deals with a solitary man who works almost exclusively at night, and the film immerses us in the rhythms and psychology of his lifestyle. In this case, Willem Dafoe plays a cocaine addict who has kicked the habit that almost killed him, but still delivers drugs to clients for a dealer (Susan Sarandon) who dreams of opening a legitimate cosmetics business. He meets an old lover (Dana Delany) who fears he will draw her into their old life of drug abuse, but that proves to be the least of their worries. Simultaneously sad, funny, and fascinating, the film inevitably leads to the outburst of violence that has become a kind of signature in Schrader's work. It lacks the visceral impact of Taxi Driver, but few directors can match Schrader's gift for creating fully realized characters on the fringes of a society to which they don't quite belong. Insomnia, in Schrader's world, is a condition suffered by those whose dreams remain elusive, just beyond their grasp. --Jeff Shannon

A great movie, excellent acting and well scripted...
This was a great movie, I've always liked William Dafoe and Susan Sarandon. interesting that they allowed this movie to be produced during the infamous sanitation strikes in NYC. I missed the reasons that brought on the staged suicide jump but in the crazy world of drug use and dealingjust paranoia is to blame...

Willem Dafoe Stays True to His Goals
If you are a Willem Dafoe fan, you'll like this movie. Not too many actors could play it the way Dafoe does: Warm and quiet as a recovering drug addict that stays true to his goals.

Not worth 4 stars
I just don't understand why it is rated 4 stars. As a drama it didn't put me on the edge of my seat. It was too slow and I expected more from a drug pusher type of movie.

Bad score
Good film by Schrader, however it could have been a great film with a Better Score. I don't know who talked him into this music ,but the singing score is awful. The sax music at the end for the last scene is absurd. This film just needed a pinch of somthing and it didnt get it.

drug dealer without a gun
That is strange: a dealer with no weapon. Nice guy. He doesn't use. He cares about those he sells to. I like the shooting: not much but very relevant. 16:9/monaural

Piercingly Lovely
Though I would've preferred a 1.85:1 original aspect ratio, this full-frame will do just fine for now. An ethereally beautiful motion picture with a career-best performance by Willem Dafoe.

LIGHT SLEEPER BLURAY from INDICATOR
As a director Schrader has a very important role in cinema history. His films are unique, and marked with his stamp (usually violent and bleak). I wouldn't choose one of his films to take to a desert island, but, when in the mood, they are all worth seeing and have something different to offer, though not in a populist way. This one is very bleak and depressing for the most part and slow to start, but the last 40 minutes change the tone and become tense and pretty violent. What made this film watchable in particular, for me anyway, was the 2 leads. I can watch Dafoe gaze into space for 10 mintes and not get bored. Somehow he just oozes character and his own form of charisma. Plenty of evidence of that here, as well as his buttocks. Then there is Susan Sarandon, and actress I can watch gazing into space....Not classically beautiful, but, my goodness she does it for me. A surprise was Dana Delaney, not my favourite actress (Body of Proof/Desperate Housewives as pretty unlikeable characters). Here she is excellent. Vulnerable, angry, and surprisingly, tastefully nude. . I can't recomend the film to everyone, but if you are in the mood for something different/thoughtful/a bit unusual, and you like the director, stars, then you could get a lot of pleasure here. The INDICATOR BLURAY is a fine transfer (a lot of the film is a nighttime shoot), good sound, and subtitles. A lot of extras all listed here, but not yet seen by me.

Good film
It sums up all the topics of Schraeder's movies, with a great cast, a dark and sad atmosphere. That said, it's not such an unforgettable movie. It conveys a sense of disperation, but it's not at Schraeder's best (not like Affliction, Taxi Driver, Harcore)
