What a woman
I can't remember the last time I read something as honest, true and raw as this intimate journal. Emily Carr was a woman whose love affair with the natural world I can never hope to attain and whose clear-eyed view of the world and her place in it are humbling.

An Artist Life
I enjoyed the musings and very real struggles of Emily Carr as recorded in her journals. A womanwho struggled for independence and enlightenment while often feeling trapped by a rigid and far less appreciative society that was too often indifferent to her work, including her writings. Still, along the way she was able to find other artists and critics who eventually recognized and brought her talents to a more appreciative audience.

We would have been besties
Emily! Her journals reveal the heart of a woman who loved her craft, her animals, her "Elephant", and her god--if not her housemates. :) The music in this book sings from very page. Whether she's painting her house or agonizing over a painting, Emily will make you smile and make you think deeply. She loves--particularly anything in nature--and she's petty. She doubts her worth as a person, and confirms that worth as a human being just trying to be a channel of the divine. She's someone I would have definitely been good friends with.

Hundreds and thousands of little things add up to a very full life.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Ms. Carr's honest, humble, and often humorous thoughts about her work, her passions and frustrations, and the scenes and people she encountered. I always feel I'm having a great conversation with a close friend when reading her books -- one of those conversations where you keep violently agreeing with each other -- because she felt most at home in the deep forest of the Pacific Northwest, as I do. She was a remarkable person in that despite the drudgery she sometimes faced in making a living, and her long struggle to be respected as an artist, she never lost sight of her inspiration in nature. She thought she was pessimistic and grouchy, but her journals show a different picture. What an inspiring and fun human being! I will read her books again and again, I'm sure, especially when I need to refocus.

Hundreds and thousands of thoughts and meanderings from the artist...
How rare indeed it is to have an autobiographical set of writings by an artist one respects... this is the third of Emily Carr's books that I have read about her life, and the most revealing about her working in her mature years. She is a gifted writer, and such a gutsy lady! I'm sure I'll read all of her writings. Her struggles with her work are inspiring, to an artist of any medium.

Five Stars
Emily Carr's writing is as impressive as her painting. A journal that holds the reader's interest.

I have to read more of Emily Carr's writing...
... As well as see more of her paintings. She writes as she paints, with honesty, compassion and a deep respect for both the human and the natural world. Also with humour, humility, a deep love of her homeland (British Columbia) and its forests, shorelines and skies. And the art and culture of its First Nations people. She paints wonderful old cedar trees, young dancing pines. She writes about her daily life - difficult sisters, affectionate pets, demanding tenants - and her struggles to capture in paint the environment she adores. Her writing is unpretentious, her word use inventive - the effect is warm, welcoming, inspirational. An unforgettable experience, reading her journal. I recommend you read it too.
