Excellent for musicians
I got this to use as a companion for Rocksmith 2014 ( which I am using to learn electric bass). Prior to this I had played flute, baritone sax, and a little piano. My one concern with Rocksmith was the lack of learning to read music ( it's been quite a while since I was working in the bass clef. This book does an excellent job of not only that, but learning chord structures. Learning how the chords are put together is essential to figuring out the most efficient fingerings on a guitar of any type, As one very good guitarist once told me, knowing the chords lets one's playing sound complex, but with minimal moving of the left hand.I suppose it would work as a stand-alone for learning, but I think it is at its best used in conjunction with Rocksmith.

Good but No DVD
I got this set of books to go along with the Hal Leonard Complete Edition Bass Method. They seem to be a good compliment to one another. There is No DVD with this book. If you go to the artist's site you find the DVD comes with a newer addition of the first book "Beginning Electric Bass". The book comes with a CD of MP3s. Other wise a good book.

Highly recommended instruction.
Great method book. I have learned new skills, sharpened old skills, and learned the music theory behind the exercises with this book.

What a disappointment
I ordered this new version of the Complete Electric Bass because on my move to another city outwest I "Lost" my original copy which came with a CD. Within 48 hrs of my purchase, I found to my great delight the older version WHICH RECEIVES A 5 STAR+ rating.. When the new edition arrived there was no cd BUT rather an invitation to go online. What a disaster! The audio was completely inaudible. Naturally unlike the CD you couldn't skip, replay or learn anything that you could with the original CD included. I should have returned it but alas I didn't so it will be banished to a dustbin somewhere. It's easy INCLUDE THE CD going forward and get back to your winning ways.

If you can afford only one book get this.
As I've explained in previous book reviews I reluctantly gave up playing guitar professionally 40 years ago, it's a long sad story, and wanted to get up to date info and learn music theory I didn't have the time to back then. No Internet or Youtube in the 1960's. You had to have a modicum of natural ability and musician friends to learn from. This book is excellent in every way. It is the three books David Overthrow has published on Electric Bass Method combined into one book. Ideal for me as I could skim through the preliminary basic chapters up to the stage I wanted more practice on. It has tab and music notation simultaneously on the page which is ideal if you want to learn to read music, which I do.He starts off with very, very easy excercises slowly building to real competency at the fretboard. I wish this was around when I was learning. The book is a lot deeper than the usual beginners book and takes you a lot further in every style of music you can think of. You want to play funky Bossa Nova type riffs, there you go.You do get a cd with tracks for all three sections of the course. I noticed a reviewer said one wasn't included with his. I can only think he must have bought the Kindle version or a used copy. After completing this course you will be more than a competent bassist. How far you go or what other books you buy to fill in any gaps in your knowledge is up to you.

THE book to get!
If you're starting totally in music as well as learning the bass, this is most definitely the book to start with - and to stay with. I originally bought another which was exercises for bass only, also good - but very complex and overly full of detail for what I wanted.Mr Overthrow's book is in three parts - beginner, intermediate and advanced and you move from one section to the next as you progress, learning all the time. It's written in a simple style without complicated references and the beginner section deals with reading and understanding music as well as the basic mechanics of playing a bass. It's a thick book (slightly bigger than A4) of some 270 pages but full of information you'll need. The music staffs are printed in larger type so you'll have no problem reading the music easily. There are many examples of different types of music on the CD and, in many cases, with the 'lesson' being played through a second time but with the bass part removed, so you can have a go yourself with the CD as background. It also indicates how you should tune your bass to match it - and even how you do that! It's a excellent piece of work and thoroughly recommended.

Excellent Book But No CD
I bought a spare copy of this excellent book - worth 5* normally. But it is advertised as having a CD, but in fact you only get a code for audio access. Its not quite what I paid for, so only 4*
