Great Stuff...But Don't Just Bolt Into This Project!
We have an 8 foot stock tank that we use as a little cool off pool. It rusted badly last summer (year 2). We decided to give this product a shot to try and save it for at least one more hot summer. We are one month in, and it is holding up well so far. PLEASE take a little advice of what we learned, and take some time to read others' tips as well.*We sanded as much rust off of the stock tank as possible, applied CLR to whatever remained, and wiped it down. This was the most time consuming step. *We sprayed four cans of self-etching primer from Harbour Freight and let it dry for a couple of days, before applying the Pond Shield. The weather here in Texas has been horribly hot, with unending 97+ degree days. Wait until the sun is not beating down on the pool (or you) before attempting to paint. We learned our lesson while applying coat #1.*Order TWO sets of 1.5 quarts. There is no way that one set will give two coats, and you need two coats for a smooth finish. We had to order a second kit and wait a couple of days to get that second coat on, and it took every smidge of both sets for full coverage, including the lip of the tank.*Work in quarters, not halves. This stuff is easy to spread for a little bit, kind of like the texture of white school glue, but thickens up like chewing gum when you least expect it. We discovered that working with 1/4 of the mixture at a time, with two people, makes it quick and more manageable. You MUST work quickly!*Cheap paintbrushes (you will throw these away) worked the best on the sides and bottom seams, and a squeegee worked perfectly on the bottom. The first coat looks thin and dreadful...the second is spectacular!*We followed another reviewer's advice about sprinkling sand on the bottom before the second coat dried, to prevent slipping on the surface. If you do this, try to find FINE sand! Ours is not, and includes tiny pebbles that are a bit sharp. It was too late when we discovered them. That's our only regret. We are very happy that this product is giving us another summer to enjoy our little pool. It looks wonderful! Good luck!
