The Vivitar 283 Electronic Flash. A love, love situation
I'm a big fan of the Vivitar 283 Flash. I love them so much that I own 3 just so that I have one on my camera, one in my camera case, and one at the house as back up in case I ever loose or break one. I like this flash in particular because it works well in a variety of situations from wedding photography to stage photography to glamour photography and it is strong and very durable. It can really take a real beating.I also love them because they mount directly onto my Nikon camera with no fuss. I can also mount them onto a bracket or onto a stand and plug directly into my Nikon without any technical problems. On that note, they also work well with slaves and are useful in that capacity.

I ordered this for my Canon AE-1, I mostly use it to have light bounce off the ceiling; direct flash is kinda harsh for my taste. The flash is really strong; stronger than what I've expected.

Best medium power flash ever
The vivifier 283 is one of the best and under appreciated strobe in the history of portable electronic strobes; versatile, manual modes; also highly reliable automatic modes; can be used on or off camera; and to knowledgeable users it can be very easily made to look not like harsh strobe light, but soft window light.

choice of flashgun
Having played around with photography for 20 years now I am baffled by Vivitar. They produce the 283 flashgun (a good product). Then they produce the 285 with almost the same specs.Except the 283 trigger voltage is over 300 volts and the 285 is 8 volts. Ok if used on the old SLR`s.But what about digital cameras? There are users asking what flashgun can I use on my Fuji 4900 and 6900? I go faint at the thought of putting a 283 on my Fuji 4900. No information is given in the instruction book. So i must conclude with the old saying "Buyer beware"

Let the buyer beware.
No stand, no remote for flash and pretty beat up. I'll eat this one. Should have checked it out a little more thoroughly.

mighty small flash
This is a manual flash and I use this as my background lighting. Slow on recycle but it works for me as I intended so I gave a 5. I have a remote trigger I use with this for fill light especially on urban or architectural shots.

Bad order corrected quickly
I ordered this Vivitar 283 due to the Q&A assuring me that the flash included the battery holder, which is necessary for using the flash with four regular AA batteries. (It is common for used 283s to be missing the battery holder on this 40-year-old model.)When it arrived, it not only the flash was missing the battery holder, but was broken (see picture) and had the sensor missing -- three problems, each one of which made the flash was useless. When I contacted the seller, she apologized and said the unit should never have left the warehouse. Also, she quickly gave me a full refund, without me needing to mail back the broken flash. While I don't appreciate the discouragement and time it took to receive a faulty unit, I do appreciate the speed and willingness to correct the problem.
