but his river characters were definitely original and the setting was great in olde England
Stewart's tale is one of endless'travel', but his river characters were definitely original and the setting was great in olde England. Too many tales with imaginary and rather weird characters, after a while , it seems all a bit Potter style. Enoughs eough!

Excellent book, reminiscent of Terry Pratchett / Neil Gaiman books.
The story takes you on an adventure, starting off slowly but picking up pace quickly, carrying you off on an adventure where anything can happen, the author creating his own universe as the story unfolds. It is warm , light and laugh out loud funny. However it is surprisingly deliciously dark at times and well balanced. For what it's worth, I have been reading the Game of Thrones books and just finished the third book 'A Storm of Swords' before starting Riverkeep. In all honesty I felt Riverkeep was every bit as enjoyable.I will be following this author with interest and look forward to his next book.

A layered book, finely crafted
Martin Stewart is able to juggle a complex narratives with well rendered characters and entertaining meta-text. He creates a very convincing fantasy world, jumping with danger. Unfortunately the climax comes rather quickly and the denouement is cursory and in some senses dissatisfying. That's mostly a product of the excellent quest narrative - it's far more about the journey than the arrival. The book has some fairly innocuous references to sexuality and is laced with violence. But the style, sometimes a little too florid, that makes this a book most suitable for the advanced reader/grown up. The only thing YQ about his is the hero's age (15/16).

Definately worth aread.
The story itself not the best aspect but the interaction of the characters, the dialogue being quite amusing at times. The departure of a couple of the characters towards the end suggests to me that a second volume is planned (hopefully). Overall worth a read.

Great read from start to finish. Thoroughly recommend reading. Thrilling but unusual story and characters that your imagination can mould.
