Good Small Drill Press For Most Shop Applications
I'd been wanting to add a drill press to the shop for years, just hadn't wanted to pony up the cash to make it happen. I'd learned all the little tricks you can use to get precision drilling from a standard handheld drill, so there wasn't any immediate need. Well, a project came about where there was absolutely no way I was going to do things by hand, the time savings with using a relatively simple and inexpensive drill press would be worthwhile. I'd had my eye on this unit for at least a couple years...so I knew right where to go.The setup was fairly simple, but also somewhat involved as well. I felt the procedure was well thought out and the directions were clear enough to follow. I did experience one mistake (an oversight on my behalf) with assembly which required me to remove the motor assembly again, but it wasn't that big of a deal. After assembly and checking basic adjustments, I was able to quickly get to work on my project...it came out exactly as I hoped and saved me hours by using the drill press instead of a handheld drill. Why didn't I do this sooner?!?!?! I've probably used the press more times than I can count in only a few month's ownership. It's kind of one of those things you can get away without having, but once you have it, it becomes indispensable and I use it all the time.As for the quality, I'd say it's good enough for most basic shop applications. Run out was OK from the factory, maybe not perfect, but good enough for my needs that include things like setting dowels, bolt holes and the like. The chuck is of decent quality and I like that there's a place to store an easily lost chuck key. I find it quite easy to set the height of the support table and the stop setting that controls how far the bit will go into your workpiece. About the only thing that I find less than desirable is the bevel setting for the support table. Put simply, to get a precision setting at a particular degree is a bit of a pain...you have to loosen then tighten a support bolt that keeps the support table's bevel. No big deal except two things - one, the bolt is hard to access with common wrenches I typically have lying around the shop and two, when you tighten the bolt, the support table has a tendency to move to a different angle and requires readjustment. Nonetheless, I don't do a ton of angled drilling, so it's only a minor inconvenience to me as I have it in the 90 degree position most of the time. The power settings from the factory are good, but it's nice to able to adjust if needed. I was kind of hoping for a switch or rotary dial to get this adjustment, but turns out you have to reset the belt on different pulleys. Not a big deal and the area is fairly easily accessed, marked with a nice label that shows you RPM's based on the pulleys you use. It takes a minute or two, not a big deal. There is a limitation with this press. The base simply won't go down enough to permit materials sized about maybe 4-6 inches, depending on the drill bit you use and how far you can get it into the chuck. I used a 4x4 fence post for a project and could barely get it in there, without much wiggle room. If you're drilling into large pieces, this unit might not work for you...but as a general press, it works well enough.4 stars. Minus one for the minor run out, the beveled table adjustment issues and a somewhat restrictive work space. Still, a good press for sure.

A well done home drill press
I received, assembled and tested this drill press, today. I am absolutely satisfied with the unit and for the price am appropriately impressed. This is one heck of a home drill press. I'll say this up front, after setting it up properly and putting it through a few paces with a couple different pieces of wood and metal and boring holes of differing depths, this drill press is smooth running and accurate with no discernible run out at least up to 1 3/4 inches. That means the chuck is of good quality for the price. Accuracy is the only reason to purchase a drill press. If "close" is good enough then a hand drill with a holder/plunger can be had for a fraction of the cost and will store away much more readily. So, accuracy is the guide. If you need accuracy down to .010 of an inch, this is not the tool for you. If you need that sort of accuracy/consistency, you are definitely in the wrong price range. Your bits cost much more than this tool. The press assembled easily. But, that's no surprise. You do not have to be a rocket scientist to assemble a drill press. All pieces feel like quality and the packing was solid throughout. My unit arrived without any external packaging damage and all parts were free of dents, scratches or marring. After assembling most of the unit and properly aligning the table to the base I put the head of the press on, put in the laser batteries, turned the dual laser on (which creates an X) and used that to align the head to spot-on perfection with the table. The price tells you this is not a machine shop level, floor style drill press. This is a bolt/C-clamp it down to your work bench or free-standing style home unit. You cannot expect the liquid smooth adjustments, locking mechanisms or accuracy found in units costing 7X as much. This evening, I found all gauges on this unit to be accurate for my work. You rotate the table to 15, 30 or 45 degrees and the table is indeed set at those angles. The depth gauge works and is accurate but the thin red line on the window will have you reaching for a pen light to set it. Well, at least these 46 year old eyes needed some assistance. But again, set the depth gauge to 1 inch, bore a hole, check it and you will be pleased. The unit runs very smooth. I read a review that the person stated the unit vibrated excessively. This state is almost guaranteed to be caused by a misaligned belt. You'll need to take the 10-15 minutes to doink around and get the motor set to the right depth to allow for proper front/rear belt wheel alignment. My unit arrived smooth as silk. I also read a review that stated the table crank arm would not stay at the desired depth. That little function is handled by the column lock - not the crank handle. The unit is not too proud to show that it is a home unit or carries an entry level price tag. You can without much effort perform very accurate work. But, a certain amount of effort is required. Any movement of the table feels something less than smooth. You can set it absolutely perfectly but check your work. Again, this is not a machine shop drill press.I count this unit an absolute win. It is stable, accurate, smooth and while this really doesn't matter, it's an attractive tool. I am not aware of a drill press in this price range of equal quality and accuracy.
