Excellent Christmas gift
Excellent Christmas gift. The app was buggy unfortunately on an iPhone 6s with iOS 10 however it got updated and now it works fine. You will get the occasional crash but not very annoying. One thing I must point is that you will need a medium size tree (not a tree looking like a branch like some people have) to spread the lights evenly and create the patterns. The colours are great and the patterns are very fun to play with.

Great for techies, not sure about mass consumers though. Some dead pixels already and a litttle bit of a pain to get running.
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. As you might be able to tell from my review history, I’d consider myself a tech lover. I’m not a big fan of the crowd funding platform these launched on but as soon as I saw them on Amazon I thought I’d have to give them a try! To briefly summarise my opinion these are fantastic for people who love new toys and have an amount of technical knowledgeable, but they’re not quite consumer ready for your everyday user (when I purchased them). I thought these were that great that after getting my first pack I went and ordered a second to try and get some increased definition on the tree! The quirky triangular tree shaped packing was nice. The array of preset schemes were brilliant. Most disappointingly was that on boxing day I noticed that one or two of the modules already had dead pixels (for instance the blue in the red, green, blue arrangement didn’t work). This is absolutely not the quality I would expect for a the price I paid (which have changed between the time I write and the time you read). I’d have to question the QA and I’m kind of reluctant to manually inspect the full chain in case they’re worse than I hope. The android app didn’t function properly on the first two phones I tried it on which were OnePlus devices. The app would connect to the modules using their own wifi hotspot, but would not successfully communicate the changes successfully to get the lights to connect to my home wifi. I tried scouring the online support but the contents was rather lacking at the time of review. I ended up installing the app on a Lenovo tablet just to test, and it worked fine there so the issue is just an incompatibility between OnePlus and Twinkly. Hopefully if you find this review via google you’ll now know to try another device. The preset programs have notable ‘jumps’ where they looped, particularly distracting on the full colour spectrum scroll where it smoothly loops maybe twice, and then jumps disconcertingly on the third time. This was actually my wife’s favourite program mode but this skipping drove me bonkers. From a technical point of view, Twinkly has a really interesting feature whereby you can apply the lights in any arrangement you like on your tree and it will use your android device camera to try and map their positions automatically – unfortunately I didn’t find this awesome concept was much use in practice, it kept picking up false light reflections from the wall the tree was near (cast by the modules themselves – maybe if you could draw a safe-shape region over the camera view to show where the tree is actually positioned it would have a higher success rate.As mentioned, I bought a second set because of the possibilities for fun! They were advertised as being able to combine them into operating as a virtually connected single set. I thought this meant I could combine them to extend the effect into a single unified and higher definition set, however I really struggled trying to get the app to see both sets to work together and in the end had to settle for using them on two different trees into two different rooms. In summary, these are awesome if you love tech, don’t mind paying slightly over-the-odds for a new gadget and don’t mind fighting to get it to work, but they’re not quite ready for the mainstream consumer. I do have reservations about the quality considering I’m already seeing dead pixels too, but if you want a new toy to keep you entertained at xmas you could do worse, the whole family loved it once it was setup, even if there were a few niggles that bothered me!*Please consider this a fluid review based on the app and product as of Dec 16/Jan 17. I appreciate that the app is probably still evolving and will update next time I play.*

The most expensive lights on the market - that fail after one festive Season.
I purchased the Gen1 Lightstring via Amazon in Dec 2018.They worked perfectly for 3 weeks (that Christmas season) and I was delighted with the product! However, after being stored carefully and in cool dry conditions, I dressed the tree again for Dec 2019 - the control unit developed an issue (a rolling power cycle where the WIfi unit failed to stay up) after many resets I was lucky enough to get them working for the remainder of the season. As an IT engineer I followed the usual trouble shooting steps - firmware update, app update, checking nearby wifi devices and signals etc however the issue rectified itself without any intervention from the twinkly support - all though I raised a case with them at the time. This year the rolling power cycle issue is back with a vengeance, the control unit has a real hardware issue (not multi wifi signal problems) and this I have reported to the Twinkly Support team - who have yet to respond with any form of resolution, and have ignored emails for the last 6 days.So after approx 40 days of use these lights are totally useless and unuseable - and at a cost of over £100 at the time of purchase - a very expensive waste of money. As the "Industry Leader" for smart lighting, and at that price point you would expect Twinkly products to last more than one season - and indeed should be christmas lights for life.Update - Feb 2021. After a lot of back and forth with emails, the support team finally accepted there was Tech issue with the unit, and have sent replacement sets of Gen2 units, which are new but not the special gold edition I had, but at least we have a resolution, albeit 2 months later. So fair play to the company coming through, and let's hope the Gen2 version lasts longer than Gen1 .

It's awesome!!
I received this product as a Kickstarter Backer, being a geek I was really curious to test it. What to say.. It's awesome!!!As the promo video says, this product is really magical, it allows you to completely customize your Christmas' tree lights decoration, creating a a great atmosphere. You will be able to control each single LED and choose among millions of colors and change its intensity and intermittent. You will be able to draw your own decorations or to choose among the already existing templates. The App is really easy to use and quite immediate, in few seconds I was able to control my lights with confidence. If I have to find a defect the calibration part still needs to be improved but I've contacted the Customer Support and they told me that their developers will release few updates really soon, that will improve the firmware and add even more functionalities to the app. Their customer support was also very gentle and replied me promptly. This start-up has launched an incredible product and I'm proud to be one of their supporter. It's a great Christmas present idea as well. I would strongly suggest to buy it!

Great product. Buggy App.
We love these! Show stopping and fun.App is buggy as hell. Crashes a lot. Nothing a close and reopen doesn't fix though. Lights keep working great even when app fails.Going to try making a square of lights now xmas is over and testing that. Can't see why they have to be tree shaped!!
