Nature All Around: Trees

Not scientifically accurate
Lay people often think deciduous = broadleaf and evergreen = conifer but you wouldn't expect such a mix up in a book used to teach children about trees. The book is beautifully illustrated and this is my only complaint, but it is pretty major if you are using it to teach children about trees. Both broadleaf and conifer trees can be either deciduous or evergreen . . . I hope the next publishing clears this up.

Informative
I love the bold and detailed (and very green!) illustrations in Nature All Around: Trees. This nonfiction book (hopefully the start of a series?) provides lots of basic information about trees -- from the differences between deciduous and evergreens, to pollination, photosynthesis, classification, as well as a look at how trees change over the course of the four seasons. In addition to providing general information, this book gives some tips on exploring and appreciating the incredible variety of trees in the world, and the many different ways they help us and the environment by cleaning the air, and providing fruit, shade, and shelter for animals. It's not too information-heavy, but would be too wordy for preschool-age children (though a glossary is provided at the end for words like cambium, stomata, cotyledon, etc.).(Thanks to NetGalley for the review copy.)

Excellent nonfiction for all ages
I loved this book! There is so much to take in and learn here. The illustrator, Carolyn Gavin, provides the magic to make this work for multiple grades. The material flows from intro material about trees and then a couple pages later the book gets into photosynthesis. The writing doesn’t hit any one audience for too long before mixing it up. Galvin’s art work ties the jumps made in the book seamlessly. Hickman presents the facts in nuggets as well as some meatier texts. I can see students coming back to this book at different grades as they become “ready” for a deeper lesson. This book will sit on our school’s library shelves.

Very interesting! My children enjoy it!
I really enjoy this book! It is beautiful and has a good bit of information about trees. The only thing I was hoping for was more about tree identification. Generally it touched on the most common trees in the US overall, though. Given the target group with the book I suppose it was wise to stick to the US, but my 10 year old would have liked to see trees around the world. Perhaps that could be another volume. I enjoyed the illustration style of the book and the information and I recommend it!

All curious kids need this book!
This little book has the sweetest illustrations with some fantastic facts for any curious kid! The labelled drawings are correct and clear and would be a wonderful addition to any explorer's home library.I wish there were more books like "Nature All Around". It makes learning easy to grasp and enjoyable. It highlights the importance of trees, points out endangered trees, and talks about caring for a tree of one's own. If we could get this book into many tiny hands, the world would be one step closer to being a better place.

A really good book written by an obvious tree lover
As the owner of a large property that has many, many different trees, we have several books that help us identify the types and species. This one is a great addition to our library. It not only helps identify the trees, it explains how the "life" of the tree affects the world around it. Pamela Hickman is most certainly a tree person. She has obviously spent a great deal of time and effort to insure anyone who picks her book will receive well written guides and information. A great book for newbies or us older tree lovers who can use the refresher knowledge to teach the younger generations.
