I cried in parts!
I very rarely cry over a book, but this books is very very sad in parts. It starts with Judith, who marries Walteof and ends with the life of her daughter Matilda, with the death by execution of Walteof (for reasons I will not give here) and also Judith herself. Enthralling book and as I have said also very sad at times - but it does have a happy ending! (Unless you read the historical notes at the end)

I've only just discovered this author's books. Her writing ...
I've only just discovered this author's books. Her writing is superb she has the knack of involving the reader of her books almost from the first page of her work! The characters she writes about are vividly portrayed; she makes "history come alive!" I've got a lot more to read!!

The Winter Mantle by Elizabeth Chadwick
I haven't read this book before and was, once again transported by in time by Elizabeth Chadwick's beautiful writing. Based, as usual on fact, even though there is little known. I knew the story of that Matilda married to David of Scotland and that Waltheof of Huntingdon was her father and this book filled in the gaps. I knew that Matilda was married to Simon and this book narrates their story. An excellent read once again from Elizabeth Chadwick.

Anachronistic!
The author may have done her research well but these characters behave like 21st century metrosexuals rather than 11th century Normans (even if they do say "Mayhap" an awul lot). Poor stuff.

Great story. Well told.
A little slow to start. Well drawn characters so you got to know them as story progressed. Some interesting twists. Totally engaging. I couldn't put it down.

Loved this!!!
Elizabeth Chadwick has an extraordinary talent for bringing historical stories to life. I have yet to be disappointed by any of her books. Loved this one.

Thoroughly enjoyable
Having now read quite a few of Elizabeth Chadwick's historical novels I feel I can recommend her withiout hesitation to anyone who likes historical stories. They are always well researched. It is sometime since I read this particular one and I admit to being a bit hazy on the characters involved. As it is on my Kindle I can't check it out - I'm afraid of going back in case I can't find my place in the present book!! As I enjoy all her books I feel I can still recommend it to all lovers of historical novels.
