Q: Is 22lbs per 2 or each?

I had to use two on a 3/4"x 24" x 57" window seat and they do slow the fall to the point of safety, but I wouldn't deem it to be childproof. If you want totally controlled fall for a heavy lid to prevent small fingers from being injured a pair of auto-type gas struts installed so as to toggle in the open or closed position would would be good. These do keep the lid securely in the open position and there is not an issue with lid weight in that position. I think 22# measured at the point of closure (maximum leverage) would be a bit too much with these closers for a slow controlled fall, but, especially near the full open position they allow time for a person to intervene and catch the lid.

Q: I have a box that drops down from the lid. Are these soft open as well as soft close?

I can't visualize a box dropping down from the lid; however, the lid opens without resistance, then closes slowly and safely. The weight of the lid is an important consideration, and if the "box" is integral with the lid, making the unit heavy, heavier closers, as found on car hatchbacks, might work better for you.

Q: If I use 2 on the same door will they mirror each other or will one side look different from the other?

The 2pcs of the lid support hinges are the same, you can install the two folding hinges on the same side of the door, they will look the same, and work the same.

Q: I want to hinge a cabinet door at the bottom so it opens down. Can these hinges be used for that? It would soft-close up, which is a little weird.

It would work fine but you probably also want to add a magnet latch if your opening from the bottom.
