Sheena - Retro VHS Style

It's been many years since I've seen this one, so decided to get it as soon as I saw it was available.The story is about a young girl who loses her parents as they're exploring a cave in Africa. The orphaned girl is taken in by a female Shaman of the village and is raised to be a fighter and to communicate telepathically with animals. Fast forward to the present where the girl, now known as Sheena, protects her tribe from attackers. A prince of the region decides to have his brother, the King, murdered so that he can assume the throne. He has his men frame the Shaman for the murder which brings Sheena to rescue her and also brings her to the attention of an American journalist who (naturally) falls in love with her and she with him. They work together to bring the prince to justice before he can exploit the land.To be honest, the movie is silly and hokey, but still enjoyable. The late Tanya Roberts is in the starring role, and although her acting is not that great, she still brings Sheena to life in a good way. Also, something to be said about the film is that the locations are great and the action is pretty good. While it's easy to pick the movie apart for its flaws, it's still nice to see.One word of warning: Although the movie is rated PG, there is still a fair amount of nudity, particularly with Tanya Roberts as there are a few bathing scenes where she appears completely nude. There are also a few bare-breasted native women early in the film. I'm guessing it didn't go to R rating because the nudity is not presented in a sexual manner. Something to keep in mind if you wonder if the kids can watch it.The Blu-ray is fine. Picture and sound are good. This is a typical Mill Creek release, so there are no Special Features whatsoever. The only option is for English subtitles. That's really the only reason this release isn't getting a full five stars.For those of you who like 80's Action / Fantasy films and who also appreciate the late, great Tanya Roberts, this is a good film to get.

The movie kind of corny, but what do you expect from a low budget from the 80’s. But yeah best thing about this was this was put out before pg-13 was invented so a lot more skin shown in a PG.

The 1984 film version of "Sheena" starring the stunningly gorgeous Tanya Roberts was lambasted by critics at the time of its original theatrical release. It was also a box office bomb recouping only a little over 5.7 million against a 25 million dollar budget. "Sheena" originally debuted in comic form back in 1937 and was turned into a television series from 1955 to 1956. There was also another television series which ran from 2000 to 2002. The 1984 film adaption of "Sheena" though is a true guilty pleasure in every sense of the word. Tanya Robert's who portrayed the jungle goddess was a bit of a hot commodity at the time coming off of her brief but memorable stint on "Charlie's Angels" from 1980 to 1981 in addition to her role in the 1982 cult classic "The Beastmaster". She also posed nude for Playboy in their October 1982 issue. She would go on to be a Bond girl in 1985's "A View To a Kill"."Sheena" while definitely not a great movie is still a lot of fun. Tanya Roberts' acting can initially seem very stilted and wooden against the rest of the talented cast, but overall I think it works for the character in terms of her overall arc in the film. She also looks drop dead gorgeous throughout and despite the PG rating (the PG-13 rating had not quite come into existence yet) the film includes a couple of nude scenes featuring her. She really worked hard to get into her best shape she could due to the physically demanding nature of some of her scenes. Fans of this truly lovely woman will find a lot to like here. The film also features stunning cinematography and terrific jungle locations throughout. As long as you take a tongue in cheek approach to watching the film, you should have a lot of campy fun.Mill Creek Entertainment finally brings "Sheena" to blu-ray in a budget priced release. Presented in the AVC codec in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio featuring a rock solid bit rate averaging around the mid to upper 20's, the film looks much better than the ancient anamorphic DVD. While it is obvious that this is an older HD master, all things considered I was pleased with how the film looks on this blu-ray release. There is some evident but not egregious use of digital noise reduction throughout and the opening scene which takes place at night looks a bit rough, but after that opening scene things definitely improve. Colors look nice and detail is solid especially during close ups despite the application of some DNR. I have seen some complaints online that Mill Creek's blu-ray of "Sheena" is a botched transfer but I disagree. While it could have definitely look better with a full scale restoration at either 2K or 4K, for a budget priced release going for only $8.99 I think that fans should be satisfied.Sound is presented in 2 channel master audio and English subtitles are included. No extras are included, not even a trailer. My disc also came with a cool slipcover which mimics a VHS box and tape.While I would like to one day see "Sheena" get the full special edition treatment, for fans of this camp classic who have been waiting for a blu-ray release of the film this disc should do just fine considering the low price.

If you love Tanya Roberts, this is for you.She plays the cult comic book and tv show character brilliantly.Sadly she is no longer with us. May she Rest in Peace.

先ごろ亡くなられたタニアロバーツさんの最高傑作です。監督は大作ならこの人ジョンギラーミンさん。日本国内ではＤＶＤが出てますが、やはりここはブルーレイの高画質で楽しみたいものです。日本語字幕も特典映像もありませんが、必要ないです。なぜならタニアロバーツさんを見る、この一点を持って成立している作品だからです。タニアさんの魅力を引き立てる映像と音楽、こちらも抜かりはないですし、またＶＨＳ風パッケージジャケットも趣があって面白いと思います。

It's not a great film! It's ok for a Saturday night.

ブルーレイで発売しているのを見つけて、国内販売DVDとの違いを感じたく購入しました。ImportCDsさん発送で15日で届きました。紙スリーブにブルーレイケース、ディスクはリージョンAです。xboxOneで再生しました、PS4でもパナディーガでもOK。トップにプレイと英語字幕のオンオフがあるのみ、チャプターや特典は無いです。映像は綺麗です（そう感じました）。英語字幕はわからんので、映像に専念することにしました。今回新品899円と送料350円でしたが国内販売DVDが千円前後で新品が手に入るのを考えると、ブルーレイ画質にこだわった買い物だったなと。購入して良かったと思っています。
