"When I looked in his eyes I saw definite canine hatred. He was shaking with rage."
The fifth "Easy Rawlns" mystery is set in the early 1960s: Kennedy is in office, the civil rights movement is gaining momentum and Easy is working as the manager of the custodial crew at a local high school in central LA. Rawlins is asked by a beautiful, young teacher to watch her Chihuaua for the day, as she's left her husband. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished, and things turn grim quickly. The story is a complicated one, involving murder, smuggling, organized crime and the epynonymous little yellow dog that provides some moments of levity in what is otherwise a dark and complex case. Mosley provides some back-story to how Rawlins landed his job with the school, some context of the larger political climate of the age, and lots and lots of gritty noir. It is Mosley's ability to have readers care about his characters and hang on tightly for the wild ride as Rawlins is jerked and bounces around between drama at work, suspicious police, threatening criminals and an aggravating chihuahua that earns the book five stars. It is an enjoyable, quick read.I love noir fiction, and Mosley is great at writing it. A recommended read.

That Dog's Been Here Before
This novel was hilarious. From the minute the dog shows up and shows Easy great deference, snarling at him while smiling at others, I knew I was in for an entertaining ride. This was my first introduction to Bonnie Shay, as well. So there's a bit of romance there with a hint of foreshadowing. The thing I love most about the series so far is that Walter Mosley isn't too over the top. He brings his stories to a believable yet thrilling conclusion. And there's so much emotion there that you feel it yourself. That yellow dog was a hoot. He definitely knew Easy in a past life and from his attitude towards him, Easy must've done him pretty dirty.

Underrated Mystery Novel
It's hard to read intriguing books like this with a critical eye. But there are many reasons why I think this is one of the best mystery books ever. Although I haven't gotten to the rest of the books in the series, I'm already in love with the character Easy. He's just such a charismatic character that you can't help but hope he doesn't get into any trouble or danger (although he seems to like going into that kind of stuff). The themes that are embedded in this novel: racial tensity, moral justice, abuse of power, financial problems, and more are what makes this book a classic. Either way, it's a fast read and definitely worth the time.
