52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday: ...And Why the Truth Is So Much Better

Fine Tuning Our Faith
Hopefully the provocative title, 52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday, will catch the attention of many, as it is a book that will clear up the thinking, and be of great encouragement, to many; many who may have been a bit misled, or mildly confused, and some who have been out-and-out misdirected.Despite the negative title, 52 Lies is a powerful and positive pronouncement of why God's truth is so much better than our faulty misinterpretations, or unwillingness to simply take God at his word. Taking something of a back door approach, it zeroes in on some of the pop terminology that has invaded the church, along with many misrepresentations and misunderstandings. It focuses on the wonderful truths of God's love and grace, that unmerited favor, that we, in all our achievement-based humanness, have such a difficult time getting into our heads. It is a grace that carries well beyond our introduction into the faith. It is the power that keeps us going. Some of the titles, or "lies", at first glance, seem innocent enough - "Salvation is Giving Your Life to Christ", "We Need to Continually Ask God to Forgive Our Sins", "Christ Empowers Us to Keep God's Law", etc. The fact that they sound acceptable at face value is part of the problem. And Steve takes you a step farther and unveils the "real truth" to fine-tune your understanding of what the scripture actually teaches.Steve McVey is a voice that needs to be heard. He doesn't hold back, championing the message of the pure, unadulterated message of the gospel of the powerful grace of God. This book comes highly recommended, along with his other works, such as Grace Walk and Grace Rules.

yet find themselves having no joy. It's for those living under the circumstances unable ...
Don't let the title cause the guard to go in preventing you from hearing what the Spirit is saying through what Steve shares. With humlity Steve makes it clear his book is not an attack on the church as a whole. Neither does he communicate as if he himself is the authority on truth. A must read for everyone! But especially those who have grown up in the bible belt and gone to church all their life, yet find themselves having no joy. It's for those living under the circumstances unable to break free of themselves and habits they secretly condemn themselves with. What causes us to not hear and see the truth of the real Gospel is what caused the pharisees to not hear and see it. Its becuase as Jesus said "becuase you SAY you SEE that you are blind". If you will humble yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth found in these pages you will find with great joy! However if you allow Satan to speak the fearful thought of being lead astray by false doctrine you won't. Trust the Holy Spirit and Jesus when Jesus said He will teach you all things! Let Him undo anything you may have held so fervently as truth as you read.

well written and well presented.
Being saying most of these things for years and have become discouraged from going to church because of the misrepresentation of God's Word. There are a few good Bible teaching pastors on TV and on line, ie, Pastor Prince and Creflo Dollar and there are many others. None in my area. McVey explains it much better than I ever could. Thanks for the Truth and the Truth will set you free.

Fabulous book
I've been a Christian my whole life. It seems that what I was taught when I was a kid has been changing and no one remembers the true gospel anymore even my mom who taught me everything I knew seems confused. This book reminded me of the truth which I had been taught. It just seems that everything has been cluttered which causes confusion. This helped provide answers for some questions I had. I am greatful to have this book which provided biblical reference for everything Steve talked about. It was in an easy to read format and I read through it in a couple days. I just couldn't put it down. It is now filled with my comments, thoughts and highlighted marks of every color! I will read it again and again. It would be a great book to use for a bible study as many Christians will need to use their own bible to reference and believe Steve is correct.I will be buying more of these for my Christian family and friends. I am also reading books by Andrew Farley and would recomend them to you as well.

Good, but a warning is merited
First and foremost, let me hit the positives. This is a good book. It is strong on scripture and will make you think. Honestly, I have enjoyed it so far. However, I have to stop reading it. I'm about halfway through, and it has become clear to me that I am reading it for the wrong reasons. As a man frustrated with the church at large, I picked this up with an ax to grind. I have been looking for a reason to be angry, and this book has helped.Do I blame the author? Not in the least. This is a personal flaw, and I'm dealing with it. But I will be plain to say that it is not a personal flaw that is exclusive to me. If you are frustrated with church, if you are looking for a fight, if the title speaks to you the same way it spoke to me, pass on this book. At least, pass for now.I'll be finishing it later. Just not for a while.

Surprising Insights ... Very Inspiring
What a great read this book has turned out to be! At first glance, what appears to be attacks on true statements by the author, when examined in the light of Scripture and common sense, inevitably ends up showing how we have allowed ourselves to settle on believing half-truths and erroneous conclusions rather than ferreting out the real truth. This book is so liberating and mind-expanding that I've purchased 4 copies so far, and have loaned one to the pastors in my church. (Update 12 Dec 2011: Believe it or not, I've now bought 28 copies of this book, to give or sell to friends and pastors, and also possibly as Christmas gifts! I've sort of made it my personal mission to spread the great message this book carries.)At the end of the book, just past page 245, the author directs us to his website (gracewalk.org), where one can at no cost access the video series where he personally covers all 101 lies in an abbreviated format, not just the 52 you've read about in this book. It turned out that 101 lies were just too many for one book.

So easy to read !
The book did not disapoint. It was easy to read, each chapter no more than 5 pages long. Each point is covered in a simple and direct approach usually with a clear example.Do not expect a theological treatise; the cover indicates the style of the book already. The writer has a gracious approach and is not contentious in the slightest. It is an ideal book to keep in the bathroom or to top up one's devotional time as the focus is on Jesus, His Grace and all sufficiency. If you are a legalist, approaching burnout or stuck in a religious rut this book is for you !It may come accross as basic but it should emphasise that our walk is all of Jesus and not of us. I would like to have seen one or two more scriptures in each chapter as it would make a great little study book for new disciples.

52 Lies, but how the truth is so much better.
I chose this book because I respect Steve McVey having read many of his books. I found the contents a breath of fresh air, and would recommend to all which to know the truth that sets us free!!

52 chapters of RELIEF
This book is well written and organized. I am enjoying it as it helps me to detoxify from some very real and damaging lies that I have believed. I especially love the section of each chapter that tells you how to change your thinking. If you are feeling like you are unacceptable to God in any way or that you must perform properly to maintain a good relationship with Him, I endorse this book because it has helped me particularly in these areas. This is a book I will go back to often!

Watch how you speak
It is important how we speak and use God's Word, but it seems to me that the Author used this Title to capture people's attention and then used it to write his book. It is true that we use language that is faulty a lot of the times, but I think semantics is the main issue here and God knows who are his no matter how we say it. it can be used to bring people to a right understanding, but it can also be used to make money on a simple issue. Blessings.

This book can be life changing.
Has some surprising teaching. A good book to read to alert us to the need for careful study of the Bible as opposed to traditional concepts.
