Beginner Vocab
As a beginner to the German language, I really enjoy the content and layout of this workbook. I have three other German workbooks and I believe that this one is the best for beginners. The exercises are basic enough that I only need to translate a few words per exercise; I got through the first section in one sitting.

Good practice book
This books is a great addition to the two other practice makes perfect German workbooks. The answers are listed in the back if you get stuck. These books explain some stuff but doesn't go into great detail. I would recommend buying a German dictionary and a good German grammar book to help you along. Overall good workbooks though.

Decent with some mistakes and oddities
This is a decent book that does a good job introducing vocabulary in different subject areas like family, careers, the home, etc. Some of the words are a bit obscure for beginners but you can just skip over those to concentrate on developing a more useful core vocabulary. This book does need to be used with other resources, for grammar and other basic vocabulary. I did find some mistakes and odd translations into English but it's pretty good on the whole.

and this volume makes that slog a little more fun and more approachable
Learning a language can be a slog, and this volume makes that slog a little more fun and more approachable. It's easy to take the sections at your own pace and to skip around to different sections, which are manageable in size. I initially got a copy from the library and learned so much, I decided to buy a copy so I could fill out answers and take notes.

Review of Swick's German Vocab
I used Swick's German Grammar Drills to great benefit, but this volume was in no way comparable. The exercises are fine, but they aren't effective for helping students to memorize grammar. Frankly, the exercises are underwhelming, and don't do nearly enough to stick the vocabulary items into the students head.I have a sense that rote memorization (even if done with thematic ties, associative memory, etc.) is necessary for real vocabulary acquisition. To that end, I recommend that you turn to websites like Memrise, rather than a textbook like this one, unless you're willing to amplify your input into the volume by writing out all the words multiple times, and writing sentences over and above the simple ones that this text requires. As a stand-alone vocabulary workbook, this is insufficient. However, if it motivates you to acquire the words it presents by doing more work than the workbook demands, I feel it would be effective.
