Praying Mantis Ultimate Care Guide

Considering that there were only 3 books on Amazon (at this time) regarding praying mantis husbandry, I purchased this one with a middle price level and a fair rating. I think it is a good book for the price but not exactly what I was hoping for. Binding is nice, a simple paperback with nice paper weight. No color photos inside but that is not what I was buying the book for. The language was simple and easy for my 3rd grader to read. I have raised Chinese mantids so not an absolute novice . . . I would put this at the novice level. I would have liked to see more detail. For example there is a great section describing the many different mantids . . . but no detail on their husbandry. It describes their color and size. In some cases their personality. But it tells you to research more for their individual care guidelines. That was what I had purchased the book for - the detail on rarer breeds that I am just starting to branch into. If I were going to do a google search for that information, I wouldn't have bought a book. SO . . . I would call this a good beginner book, an interesting and easy read. But I don't really consider it an "Ultimate Care Guide" as the title describes itself.

Perfect for a new mantis keeper or soon-to-be keeper. I was very satisfied with this book; I was captivated by the information that is going to help me keep my new little insect friends. Topics covered included(this is an incomplete list of chapters not including sub chapters): physical mantodean characteristics and biology, information on 57 variants of mantid, basic understanding of mantid behaviour, habitation design and care, health and breeding, feeding mantids from nymph to elder master mantis, and a general mantid care sheet.

Good book packed full of information

I intend to get a Mantis for indoor macro photography. I did not know they are friendly,and do not mind being handled.The book covers habitats,food,and handling.When I finally get one,this book will be a good reference.

This book should be considered the " how to" book on raising and learning about the Praying Mantis. It is easy to read, and also contains a complete reference section that even has a list of online resources that even includes pet shops that sells this facinating, and amazing insects! As a home school parent I am always looking for good educational books/resources. This book is a great tool for young and older students alike. The book gives a good description of mantids (who knew there are over 2400 species of them!), their care, costs and tips, all of which is easy to read and understand, especially those learning about mantids for the first time. I would highly recommend this book for home school students!

I was under the impression this would be a good care guilds to share and use with my child. It is way above his head and is really meant for people extremely serious about raising praying mantis, not for a family hatching eggs and learning about the bugs.

As I was buying my first pet mantis, I wanted to make sure I had all the necessary information to make the experience a good one. I read the book from cover to cover in an hour. She has already had her first moult and is very happy. This is a great book that I would happily recommend to other beginners.

Good book, full of facts and helpful information to get started

I really struggled to find a decent book on these guys and this covers their care, feeding etc really well. Only gave it 4 starts because there are several typos which the publisher should be ashamed of. Other than that, a great little book if you're starting out in the hobby!
