A Philosophy Lesson Wrapped in Heavenly Action Bliss
FURI is one of the greatest games ever made, but unfortunately it slipped below a lot of people's radar because they simply did not understand what it is. I however, got a free copy a while back and after beating the game (on Easy!) I am here to tell you it's one of the greatest games I've ever played, and definitely in my top ten games of the last ten years. If you have played El Shaddai you will be familiar with both the combat style and graphical style of this game. Everything has a neon dream look to it, and is hyper-stylized. The music is absolutely incredible and easily one of the greatest game soundtracks ever made (pure electronica/adrenaline magic). Every level is different. Every boss is different. And what this game is...is a boss rush.Make no mistake about it, this game is not for everyone. Gameplay consists of a boss rush with brief interludes to walk to the next boss while a man in a rabbit suit spews philosophy at you. Your character never speaks a word in the game, but it's obvious from the outset that you/he is actually a villain, not a hero. That alone sets this game apart from most. But once the philosophy lesson kicks in you may find yourself rethinking your life, particularly if you get all the way to the final boss and finish the game.At it's core the story (yes, it has a story) is about redemption, freedom, destiny, fate, and free will. Is escape justified if you have no hope of happiness imprisoned, even if you deserve the punishment? Does manipulation to do the right thing make it any less right? Does doing the right thing have significance when no one will know or care? Is betrayal and genocide through inaction justified in order to spare innocent lives? Yeah, THAT'S the kind of plot this game has, and it left me absolutely staggered (especially when you consider that you are basically a villain escaping maximum security prison by killing the entire intergalactic Justice League one person at a time). Heavy stuff, and it only gets better from there. The gameplay...is not easy to describe. It's a bullet-hell shooter where some bullets are destroyable and even give you health, a hack n slash where you must time your button presses PERFECTLY or you will be hit with combos that drain your health in a flash, and ultimately an extremely intentional timing-based puzzle of lightning-paced combat that requires mastery of reflex control (the opposite of a button-masher).This game got a lot of negative reviews because people didn't understand it, people thought a pure action game was shallow, and most of all, people complained it was TOO HARD.All I can say is, pay attention, practice practice practice, and if you suck at action games (as I do) play on Easy. It took me two weeks of daily play to get past the first boss on Easy (!) but when I beat this game it was one of the greatest moments of my life. The feeling of beating a boss when you have been stuck is right up there with Hyper Light Drifter in the difficulty/satisfaction. I HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone who likes action games and appreciates the ART of video games. And get the soundtrack. It's amazing.
