Useful in weird ways
I wasn't expecting this elaboration of archeology digs and findings but revelled in the terminology because it seemed informed and something that I could use in my fiction writing.

Best single volume on the Viking Age in English
Impressive in both scope and depth, this volume is the first place I look for information on any aspect of the Viking Age from archaeology to literature. Each chapter is written by a leading specialist in that area, and the Bibliography provided for each section is an excellent jumping-off point for further reading. If I could own only one general work on the Viking Age, I would choose this book.

Bone dry, repetative and boring even to an academician
While I'm not a professor who specializes in Viking history, I have written enough textbook chapters to know that this book would be hard to digest even for someone who studies Vikings for a living. Each chapter is written by a different author, and unfortunately nearly every chapter starts in a nearly identical manner, namely going on at length saying that there are very few reliable documents of the prechristian viking era and that the reader should take anything written in the book with a grain of salt. Ok, said once is fine, but each chapter goes on for paragraphs highlighting the weaknesses in the source material and sometimes only devote a tiny fraction of the chapter to the subject matter. I got through nearly the entire book by sheer will.

The one and only for ancient Norse history and culture.
Simply the best book you can get on the subject.

A Great Resource
This book is a compilation of scholarly papers on various subjects relating to the Viking Age. It is very good at summarizing the information that is available and noting the sources.

Just great!
One of the most complete books about the vikings. Great for those who really want deep knowledge on the theme.

The Viking World
I agree wholeheartedly with the previous review. This is an excellent book, covering all aspects of the Viking age. I'm using it for my senior honours year in a history degree, so again I agree with the previous reviewer, and also agree with his recommendation for a introductory read on the subject. However, I would say that this book in general, despite the in-depth academic treatment of the subject, is still a straight forward and enjoyable read. I would recommend purchasing the hard copy as opposed to the kindle. Although bulky the hard copy is easier to search through the chapters. The way the kindle is set up makes searching awkward. I've used both, a library hard copy, and purchased the kindle version. That is my only regret of my purchase, stick with the proper book.

The definitive book on the Viking World
By bringing together short essays by the experts in each field, eg Hall on York, this book comprehensively covers all aspects of the Viking age. The bibliography on each chapter alone is worth its weight in hacksilver. The only element lacking is the recent genetic evidence which seems to suggest eg widescale Danish settlement in eastern and northern England and a greater Russian involvement than was known 5 years ago.

A comprehensive authority
The most complete Viking works I have ever read, plenty of new revelations. Such a joy to read.
