Great all year pants
These pants are very lightweight, but durable. They wear so comfortably well. They material is light and stretchy. I like where the bottoms zip off. Usually zip off pants have the zippers below the knee, which when the bottoms are zipped off, means you're almost wearing capris. Not a good look for a dude. These pants zip off just above the knee. They are perfect for autumn and spring backpacking trips, and I believe they would be great the other months of the year also. I'll be wearing them even in the summer since they are so light and will give me mosquito protection in the summer without being too hot.Update: I had originally ordered 34x34 because that is my pant size. I have to return those and get the 36x34. The 34x34 pants seemed to fit well, but they were just a little snug which caused the crotch area to be too tight whenever I squatted. I would advise getting one waist higher. These are still awesome pants, though.Update 2:I wore these on a four hour hike today and they were very comfortable. I took the pant legs off before I hit the trail. The pants were very flexible and breathed well. The only slight issue I had with them was the right cargo pocket. It has a small piece of Velcro on it and by the end of the day it didn't seem to want to stick after my sweat got it wet. Minor issue in my mind, though. The left cargo pocket has a zipper on it. Not sure why the right doesn't also. One other thing I like about these pants. The lower pant legs have an L and an R stamped on them so you don't have to guess about which one is which.

If you are larger or more muscular build- READ!!!
Pants are great as far as durability, design and functionality that you would expect from the other reviews they truly are great pants. Sizing is hit and miss depending on your build. 3 stars for the inconvience of having to reorder and ship product out and wait for it again.Pants have a slimmer cut to them through the butt and thighs (if you are muscular or have a bubble bum- you WILL have problems). Waist size was about 1 size off (wear 34, need a 36). Due to the cut of the bum and upper legs, wearing a base layer or longer underwear (I had lightweight Merino underneath) was uncomfortable and did not leave enough play in gusset and stitching that I would be comfortable kneeling, stooping and moving around in them as desired.Overall, if you are a "normal" or "thin" build, these pants for sizing should be great. If you consider yourself "muscular" or on the heavier side, order a full size up than what you need. These pants were not designed for us bigger more athletic guys.

Maybe okay for hiking, but a no go for five days of backpacking
I really wanted to love these pants. I bought these for use in backpacking because I understood them to be good pants for that purpose. Lightweight, breathable fabric, easy conversion to shorts, the (usually) reputable Columbia name. Here is what happened: as described, these pants ride *below* the hip. Hip-huggers, sort of. And for pretty much all forms of exercise, I wear boxer briefs and have done so for years. Well, wearing these Columbia pants with my normal backpacking pack caused the following scenario - there was a large gap where my underwear rode up over the top of the pants. The belt of the Columbia pants themselves was probably cutting into my hip bones. And then the thicker, padded belt of my pack (an Arcteryx Bora 80 pack that I have owned and used since about 2002 with no problems whastoever) ended up with some kind of friction and abrasion against both my underwear and my bare skin, resulting in the gory, ghastly wounds on my hips. I tried to attach pics to this review but apparently Amazon finds them inappropriate, so that is saying something! I've never seen anything like these wounds in all my years of hiking or backpacking and am very inclined to return these pants. I treated myself with gauze bandages in duct tape while still in the wilderness and continued changing bandages for the next five days. Perhaps my fellow lovers of the outdoors can advise me if I ought to order a size larger or smaller? Although they are a bit snug, they seemed to fit me just fine and allowed for a full range of movement even with a heavy pack on. I am actually scared to try these again in a backpacking scenario, and would not have ordered them just to have a nice pair of hiking pants. So any advice is welcome.
