Food Styling and Photography For Dummies

Assumes you already know photoshop and basics of digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera
I must be more of a dummy than Alison Parks-Whitfield anticipated, because this book is for readers who are "fairly well versed in the basics of using a digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera" and "somewhat familiar with using Photoshop for post-processing your images". I chose Food Styling and Photography for Dummies because I am a complete dummy when it comes to food styling and photography. I know nothing about cameras, post-processing images, or how to keep the ice cream from melting. If I'd already mastered the DSLR and were adept at Photoshop, I daresay I would no longer consider myself a "dummy". This may be a great resource for the "dummy savant", but I am, alas, just your run-of-the-mill, garden-variety dummy. Because this book might be a great resource for dummies on the smarter end of the dummy spectrum or readers who already know how to use a DSLR camera and post-processing software, I'm giving this three stars. Good luck.

No Color Photography
I'm not going to be able to learn much from grainy black and white photos. There are *no* color photos.

Sad...
I was so excited to order this book. The cover plainly says, "in full color" which is one reason I purchased it.Upon opening the book, there is NOT ONE color photo anywhere in this book. Not one single photograph is in color.Extremely disappointed.

I like this book and she has some great advice
I like this book and she has some great advice, but I guess I was hoping for more information than it provided. I haven't finished it and I've had it for a while now, so in fairness, it may provide earth shattering advice in the last few chapters, but I feel like she didn't tell me much more than I'd already figured out, and my time was better spent behind the camera than finishing the book.

Food Styling Anyone Can Do
Being a recipe writer and cook it is often necessary to get some difficult shots of food. But sometimes the beans are not as green as you want them, or the potatoes are not as crispy or browned. The gravy congeals and dries on the edges under the lights. This book shows you so many ways that you can create mouth watering photos with or without the tricks employed by profeshional food stylists. Even if you do not have the space to create a small studio for the photos there is a way around it. This book is well written and easy to understand. It is a must have on the shelf if you are even thinking of taken photos of food. I recomend it to everyone and anyone. You would be amazed what the professionals use to make the photos look as good as they do. If you knew you would not want to eat it. Good Foundation for Food Styling/Photography
I bought this book because I have enjoyed the "For Dummies" format on other topics.Since I am new to food photography, I think this book will make a good foundation for building more specialized knowledge on. It probably doesn't contain a lot of insider secrets, but it's a good place to start. The pictures are not awe-inspiring but nice. It broadly covers relevant areas including "which camera and best lens to have" to "how to sell your pictures". I am glad I bought it, but will be looking for some more inspiring stuff in this field soon.

The cover says IN FULL COLOR- the only thing in color was the cover. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!
With food photography, lighting is one of the most important things---- the images =--all the images, in this book, are in black and white..... Even though the cover says IN FULL COLOR. The back says, Full Color. What happened to the color???? I want this same book, but in color throughout!

This book is truly as truly for someone who doesn't ...
This book is truly as truly for someone who doesn't know anything about food terminology or styling. I'm not the target audience for this book, but if you truly know where to start as a food stylist or food photography, give it a try.

Disappointed by no colour photographs and no styling information.
The pictures inside were all black and white and not very high quality as a result. I returned the book with a description of the problem and opted for a replacement. When the replacement arrived, it too was black and white. Does anyone read the complaint issue descriptions? On kindle it’s in colour if you have an iPad or colour capable kindle. Don’t bother buying the print version. The text is all about photography and little if anything about styling (I didn’t read it all). If you are starting out in food photography it has some merit but most food photographers I know don’t use motor oil as a replacement for Syrup or other such “tricks”. I wanted this to be good but I was disappointed.
