Tolkien and the Brothers Hildebrandt
These are my favorite artists for Tolkien. Loved the calendar art they did and this covers that along with personal recollections.A great coffee table book that your visitors will enjoy thumbing through. Several of these artworks remain favorites even to this day. The painting of Smaug on his treasure is so beautiful. You will find this book worthwhile if you admire the Brothers Hildebrandt works for the best books ever. And BTW, they also do a number of other subjects if you like their work.

a well done art book
The illustrations in this book along with the descriptions are really well done. Having read the Tolkien books multiple times these illustrations really bring out the stories.

Beautiful art
The art is definitely the highlight of this book. Beautiful paintings. It's nice to get some insight into the creative process. Also, Greg Jr.'s reflections add some intimate details. And he's a decent storyteller.I read this art book on my tablet, so zooming in and out was easy. It might be nice to have a coffee table art book with larger reproductions of the paintings to get a sense of scale the brothers used.

I also bought a copy for my sister and she totally enjoyed it as well
I'm a die hard Hobbit/Lord of the Rings person. I had the Hildebrandt calendars back in the 70's and as a young person, cut them out and had them hanging on my walls. So very interesting to read how they came about!!! I also bought a copy for my sister and she totally enjoyed it as well. It is my 'coffe table' book😊

Beautiful and magical
I remember the Hildebrandt's calendars from the 1970's. They were so beautiful! So I was thrilled to find this book, and it even exceeded my expectations. Besides being of high-quality paper and containing all the paintings that were on the calendars, it also includes a lot of additional material, including stories of how the paintings were conceived, and memories of the process as seen through the eyes of Gregory Hildebrandt Jr, who was a child at the time. I felt the magic!

Beautiful Art
I remember when these calendars came out. I had at least one of the calendars that I recall. The stories behind the creation of the calendar and the pictures are terrific. Thoroughly enjoyable!

A Wonderful Recapitulation!!
Here, under one cover, are all the works the Brothers Hildebrandt turned out in the 1970s devoted to Tolkien's "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." A must-have for any Tolkien aficianado, especially those who are too young to remember the original calendars and other places the Hildebrandt illustrations turned up!!

Brothers Hildebrandt, Still Great, After All These Years
This is a great book. I was a fan of the Hilderbrant Brothers from the late 70's, and didn't know much about their biographies much past the mid 80's. So this book was a great catch-up for me.I learned a lot from this book about the brothers life, post Tolkien. Not all of it happy. But the artistry and imagination is still an absolute joy.The cover could be a bit stiffer. But still, greatly recommended.

The Best Tolkien Illustrators
The Hildebrandt brothers are, in my opinion, the best illustrators of the Tolkien mythos. Although the likes of Alan Lee and John Howe are excellent in their own right, the Hildrebrandt brothers' style is really great at capturing the magnificence of Middle Earth and the drama of the Ring stories, while still retaining some modicum of comedy. This is a terrific book that chronicles the Tolkien works of the H. brothers, including some great photos of the models they used, their sketches, and more. Greg Hildebrandt's Jr. narration also contributes a lot to the book, since his memories of how the paintings were made, as well as how he participated in them, adds an increased depth to the experience. This is a glossy book, of very high quality, and the printing really honors the original paintings.

Wonderful to read!
Love it! Going through the pages of these wonderful illustrators works of the Tolkien's fantasy genre have been both enjoyable and fun. The tips and the skill of the trade are very informative but not too much to be boring or condescending. Lovely book to have if you're a fan of the Hildrebrandt brothers.
