A quick, informative read
Whether you have been in the field herping hobby for decades or are just starting off, chances are that there is something in this book for you. It's probably the closest thing we have to definitive guide to herping, and even though I've been at this hobby for six years, I still learned a few things from the words of authors Joshua Holbrook and Mike Pingleton. The book is thorough but never spends more time on a particular topic than it needs to. It covers just about everything one would want to know about the hobby, while also being mindful of ethical herping. There are also lots of great stories, anecdotes, and photos in each chapter, which helps to break up the reading. The overall design and layout of the book is excellent, and all of the photos are of superb quality. The authors really poured their hearts out into writing this book! If you are at all interested in the hobby of field herping, be sure to get this book!

Great Reference
This book is wonderful and extremely useful for an amateur herper like myself. However, my new copy is missing pages 101 and 102 and Amazon has no link to contact the seller. Hopefully no one else has run into this problem and is able to still use this book effectively.

A well done field herpers "HOW TO" that also answers the WHY, WHEN, What, Where and Who.
I consider myself a veteran field herper. And in my first time through the text, it looks like all of my 40+ years in the field are very well covered! Many can attest that you never stop learning the "art" of field herping, and this book is sure to assist the newbie as well as the more experienced. My personal favorite are the short snippets in green background. "Always check behind the gas station" had me recounting my experiences! Well done, Josh and Mike and the others who contributed that I consider my colleagues and friends.

Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask.
Wow! This book covers everything about field herping and then some. I've been field herping several decades, and this is a VERY comprehensive guide for someone brand new to herping with helpful information for seasoned herpers. If you're new to field herping or looking for more information, this book is all you need. You'll receive extensive knowledge on how to find reptiles and amphibians, tips on photography, herp jargon, taxonomy, field herping history, ethics and etiquette, safety tips, and a ton more. I'm impressed Mike and Josh, this was well thought out and skillfully written.

Helpful for extreme beginners
This offered some helpful advice but as a somewhat experienced field herper, I wish it had gone a bit further - maybe a second book could be released for experienced herpers to learn more about specific behaviors for different groups of animals that would aid in finding them. I do appreciate that someone thought to write this book, though, and it is easily the best resource on the market for beginning herpers

So good I bought it twice!
Enjoyed this book so much I bought it a second time after leaving my first copy in the seat pocket on a plane! Excellent resource, especially if you are new to the herping hobby. More experienced herpers will likely not get too much out of the book but will still pick up some tips and the photography is excellent.

Pleasantly Surprised
I picked this up thinking it was a light, short-read for “beginners”. Little did I know, I would learn a few things along the way. This book covers most everything. Getting a different perspective on common issues is really cool. The color photos are so crispy clean. This book is a must for anyone’s herpetology shelf
