Stargazer's Guide to the Night Sky, The

Great Easy To Understand Astronomy Text
I have seen several of Dr Lisle's lectures on YouTube and enjoy his presentations and how he explains things for the NON Astrophysicist... and the book is a great source of information and is presented in easily understood language. I took Astronomy in college many years ago, forgot a lot... but this book was not only a great refresher from Astro101 but is giving me some good, basic general purpose information to get out and look at the night sky. Have just ordered the telescope I settled on... NOW waiting to have some fun. IF you are thinking of getting into sky gazing I highly recommend doing some reading first. Spend a couple weeks doing that and maybe use one of the many apps out there for your Apple or Android device to find a few things, maybe peek at them with binoculars... and think through exactly what you want to do, to see and WHERE you will use your gear before clicking on that "Buy Now" button.

Anyone who is interested in stargazing should buy this book
I was looking for a good introduction to stargazing and I'm glad I found this book.I picked up a copy of the popular "NightWatch" book for only $10 at a local discount store and, although it's a good book and has some handy star charts, it doesn't have anywhere near the information "The Stargazer's Guide" has."The Stargazer's Guide" is written by an astronomer who is a creationist, and is published by Master Books, which is a creationist publishing house. This was one of the main reasons I purchased the book: I wanted something written from a Christian (and creationist) perspective.Except for the biblical quote (Psalm 19:1) on the first page, and the brief Afterward at the end of the book, one would never suspect "The Stargazer's Guide" was written from a Christian (and creationist) perspective. This is what I was looking for: a good, basic stargazing guide that replaces the typical and negative anti-theistic "We're insignificant to an uncaring universe" perspective with the more positive Christian perspective:"The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork." (Psalm 19:1)I found the first two chapters of the book, on celestial motion, to be especially helpful. This really is a good book, and not just for Christians and creationists.Anyone who is interested in stargazing should buy this book.

my favorite and most-looked-at book
This book has everything an amateur astronomer could need. This is, by far, my favorite and most-looked-at book. It is personal and practical. The pictures are excellent (and many). The text is clear and easily understood. And, most importantly, the subjects of the chapters stay inside the chapters and do not go running all over the place! The quality of the material of the book is also exceptional. Believe me, I have taken this book everywhere, and I carry it wherever I go. The pages are pretty thick (I have had my copy well over 3 1/2 years, and not a single page has been torn or even frayed). The plastic on the covers is beginning to peel off, but you must remember that I have taken "The Stargazers Guide" everywhere. I carry this book around like Linus and his blanket!

Dr. Jason Lisle's newest book (here is the publisher's note Your first step into the vast universe with a one-of-kind guide to the night sky!Find out when and where to look with just the naked eye... you'll be amazed at how much of the galaxy you can see. Locate Orion, the well-known constellation, and within it you can easily see the red supergiant star Betelgeuse over 3000 trillion miles away. Or marvel at our galaxy, the Milky Way, shining brightly overhead in late summer as you see the light spots containing entire star clusters!Includes 150 beautiful photos, full-color star-charts, easy to use illustrations, and video link for expert advice! "How do phases of the moon work? When will the next solar eclipse take place? What is that bright star setting in the west? How do i find Saturn?" All of these questions are easily answered with this helpful guide. The heavens truly declare God`s glory....now understand why) It is even more wonderful then that, the pictures are marvelous and Dr. Lisle is the most readable astronomer you will ever findUpdate, I have vision trouble and this was still very usable it inspired me to use my binoculars and try to look for stars. I am planning on getting a telescope, if you have a child with a medical problem or are an adult with medical problems this is the astronomy book for you

Great gift for any astronomer
Informative, well-written, beautifully illustrated guide to understanding the heavens. The book goes in depth on how to set up a telescope, variety of stars, where to find nebulae in the night sky and much more. I appreciate that Dr. Lisle omits the erroneous, dogmatic conjecture of impossibly long ages found in many other publications relating to astronomy.

Love it!
Definitely a must-have for anyone who loves astronomy!Dr. Lisle is writing for people who would actually like to do astronomy as a hobby. He does a great job at explaining things in a way that makes really good sense to the average person, and makes you feel like you actually learned something. He also has tons of great tips on how to get the most out of a casual astronomy session, which is super helpful for those of us that can't afford a $10,000 telescope.Plus, the book is filled with really great full-color photos, so it's a ton of fun just to look at!

The Planisphere is great!
This book arrived in excellent time. I have started reading and I already love it. Very clear and easy to understand without being overly simple or patronizing. Love the photos and the planisphere included in the back of the book for knowing what and when to view in the sky. Excellent book, just like all of Dr. Lisle's other books. He is an excellent author.
