Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse Color Sundays Vol. 1 (DISNEY MICKEY MOUSE COLOR SUNDAYS HC)

Floyd Gottfredson concentrated on the daily Mickey Mouse strip for most of his career, but for a while in the 30's he drew the Sunday too - and the result was some of his best stories."Case of the Vanishing Coats" with Mickey and Donald is a small-scale mystery, fun, but with suspense. Donald is a less developed character than he became with Carl Barks, but I turn to this story more often than to the more sophisticated Phantom Blot."Dr. Oofgay's Secret Serum" is one of Gottfredson's real classics. It's a star turn for Horace Horsecollar, and for my money Gottfredson never did anything funnier.The rest of the book is good, but these two stories are the best, and worth the price by themselves. Note too: this book is well-made. Three of these stories are featured in Another Rainbow's Gottfredson book of 20 years ago, but the limited edition is far too pricey and the trade edition has a weak and fragile binding. This Fantagraphics volume is much better made and will stand the test of time.No one ever did Mickey like Gottfredson, and Gottfredson's best Sundays are here.

Floyd Gottfredson , who started out as a temporary artist for Mickey Mouse daily newspaper strips, a job "for a few weeks" turned into a profession that lasted over 40 years. The stories in this volume are early Gottfredson, his later work had a smoother more professional feel to it; but the early work had the best, most imaginative, stories. Like Barks, Gottfredson had a talent for spinning a yarn. His Mickey Mouse stories were the best ever written for Disney. This book shows us the early Mickey with all his foibles (before he became the Disney Poster Child). The stories are great, the artwork is quite good for the time and thus I highly recommend it.

My daughter has been collecting this series of books for over a year now and was delighted to add this one to her collection. She really enjoys the old strips and hasn't put in down for 3 weeks!

Just pure awesome history is contained in this book. Shows your classic Mickey behavior and is entertaining to read. Check this out if you have any interest in Mickey Mouse.

Once again Fantagraphics proves it does this sort of thing better than anyone else with another terrific balance of comics anthropology & glorious funnies reprints, this time in glorious color. The Sunday pages look fantastic, as if surveying the color pages in their original inception. Once again the biggest drawback is the cover price: potential buyers are advised to purchase from the lowest priced seller one can find. With free shipping, of course

In their effort to restore the strip the editors decided to re-color everything. I can only compare this to one original sunday, but it seems like they haven't even followed the original color scheme 100%, but mostly I'm missing darkened areas on the backgrounds, sometimes suggesting shadowed areas and giving volume. And of course, the feel of looking at a newspaper strip is completely lost. It look's too smooth, there's no texture. That takes away some of the charm for me.Otherwise it's an excellent edition by Fantagraphics, like all their Disney stuff, beautifully designed books with a generous page-count and filled with interesting extras.

If you like the old Disney comics I would recommend this book. Great strips from long ago daily newspapers.

Imposible de hallar en España

Muy buen compendio de tiras comicas, mejor q las de blanco y negro ya que estas abarcan todo una pagina y no solo 4 viñetas como los de blanco y negro... gran adicion a la coleccion de walt disney. Muy recomendable. Ya solo espero que amazon tenga nuevamente en existencia el otro especial de mickey de 'los Sundays' para tener los 2 que han salido.

Yet another great volume of David Gernstein's Mickey Mouse newspaper strip Hardcover collection edition, this one covering Floyd Gottfredson's Sunday color strips. Vol 2 seem to have sold out already, but I found one at LABYRINTH BOOKS.

Stupenda edizione delle tavole di Floyd Gottfredson, insieme ad Ub Iwerks, uno dei migliori disegnatori di Mickey Mouse.Ottima edizione dal punto di vista grafico una festa per gli occhi...interessantissimo e meraviglioso apparato iconografico in appendice.

As much as I love the Mickey dailys this book is what Ive been waiting for. Most of it is of the one page gags, which I prefer but there are some longer stories too which are very enjoyable as well. Dare we hope that they will bring out the Sundays of Al Telliaferro`s Donald Duck?
