Daybook: The Journal of an Artist

Rich and dense as a chocolate torte!
I bought this important book Daybook by sculptor Anne Truitt at the recommendation of Austin Kleon a fabulous "guru" of creativity whose books I love.I read a couple of pages a day during my writing day lunch break; any more would be hard to absorb, this book is so dense, so lyrical, so creatively important a study of the cost and taxonomy of the creative life. Everyone who makes a living creating should read it. I was moved daily by Anne's surgically delicate use of language and her keen observations of herself, her work, and the world.

the process of life
It is a amazing accounting of a woman's life....(and she was the same age as my still living mother) . The experiences of working and raising a family and being aware of her own passions as an artist are timeless. I have read few journals that I can learn from .... Her story does not read like a novel, she shares her knowledge and thought process about being an artist and mother and a woman; but it is relate-able.

Delightful read!
I read this book on a train ride to Boston. As a female artist I found it encouraging to read about Anne's balance between work and children. I'm so glad I impulse bought this book! I learned so much through her writing!

... relate to most of her writing but I really enjoyed the parts when she wrote about her personal life
I'm not an artist so I didn't relate to most of her writing but I really enjoyed the parts when she wrote about her personal life, especially her childhood. She is an excellent writer and had an interesting life. Worth a read.

The inner life of an artist
An excellent reflective view of an artist's creative process. Her emotional, physical and general state of relatedness clearly impacted on her creative process. The book conveyed how the artist was driven to work and could not be apart from it.External sources of approval were not always forthcoming but still she worked.I want to read her other work now.

immensely moving
Truitt has an extraordinary grit for describing the two great satisfactions of her life: family and art. A glowing masterpiece.

Nice words about art and what it is to be an artist today.
I was recommended this book almost as a guide to juggling a passion for art with a job (albeit a very creative job) and general life commitments. While it was nice and personable and did spark a few ideas about art and what it is to be an artist in the modern world, I found it hard to relate to her when she would mention her family's estate and how she would occasionally dip into a few £k of her savings during a particularly dry period.
