Athenaeum ~ Radiance

A Gem Anywhere
Athenaeums debut disc released in 1998 has some pretty good tracks. I checked this band out on Spotify and its not just this album that shines, it's everything they have released. My favorites here are "On My Mind" "Lifeline" "Different Situation" "No One" "Away" and "So Long".

Loved these guys' music. I used to hear them live, years ago. Mark Kano is not only a great vocalist and talented musician and songwriter, but also a really nice guy!

A Great CD to listen to anytime
This CD has a great tone to it. It delivers great music throughout. This band is amazing deserving of a 5 star rating. I wish they had more music out.

Maybe 3.5 stars but I think their next album will be better
This is a strong debut album. The huge radio hit "What I Didn't Know" is probably not indicative of the album. It is the real single on the album, though there are several bright spots. What we have here is an old fashioned, straight ahead rock album. Not a lot gimmicks, samples, or even clever lyrics. But it's good rock. It's hard to compare to the stuff that's popular nowadays. Comapre to Matchbox Twenty, or Gin Blossoms without the harmonies.None of the songs are bad, but several are merely okay. Highlights are the aforementioned single plus "Flat Tire", "Unnoticed", and "So Long."Here's the good news: I heard them in concert recently and the songs they played from their upcoming album sound even better. The only weakness they have on "Radiance" is the blandness. The new songs maintain the strengths while adding more harmonies and catchier guitar hooks. I'll be sure to review that one when it comes out.

Great unknown band
You just need one listen to Flat Tire to get hooked. With few exceptions, this CD is full of catchy soft rock songs (sometimes ressembling country). Some of these songs may grow old a little quick (So long, Different Situation), but there's a good chance you'll never get tired of the better ones like Flat Tire or the energetic Unnoticed. The only thing really that you can hold against Athenaeum is that some of their songs really sound alike. Some of the ballads on this album sound just the same. But it's really a minor detail because they may be similar, but they're still worth listening to (something they are missing on their other albums). If you have to buy only one Athenaeum CD (and you should) it would be this one.

Radiance For The Future
It seems here lately a good (solid) rock band is very hard to find. Everything seems to follow the same old trend, sounding too familiar and too ordinary. And although Athenaeum does tend to sound alot like similar bands as "Hootie and the Blowfish" and "Better than Ezra" at times, they still have their own sound, blending perfectly with the genre. With tracks such as "What I Didn't Know" "Flat Tire" and the honest, "No One" makes you realize the potential and talent this band possesses. Of course, just like every other rock album out there, some of tracks on "Radiance" do seem to fall short of power (such as "So Long" and "Unnoticed") but still hold a perfect spot to touch up the album a little bit. The concept of this album is truly brilliant and somewhat extraordinary. The songwriting for "No One" is spectacular and deserves much credit (i guess you can already assume "No One" is my all time favorite). Im pretty sure everybody in this world can relate to atleast one song on this album, I know every song has influenced me to inspiration on much cases (which is yet another reason why "Radiance" is the greatest album on the planet). I can picture a great future for these guys. Their music is brilliant and reigns surpreme on the highest of the alternative rock genre. "Radiance" is certainly a work of art and definetly needs a fresh ear to make point judgement. It's without a shadow of a doubt that if you dont like this album, you dont know real rock when you hear it...
