Knit Christmas Stockings, 2nd Edition: 19 Patterns for Stockings & Ornaments

The Stockings Were Hung By The Chimney With Care . . .
One of my most treasured collections is the collection of Christmas ornaments and decorations that I've collected over the years, many of them items that my children or I have made. Nothing says Merry Christmas more to me than stockings hung by the chimney and some of the most beautiful are hand-knit, but trust me - patterns can be hard to find! I looked for years to find enough for my children to each have a knit stocking!Author Gwen Steege has gathered together patterns for 11 different "full size" stockings as well as mini-socks, felted heart, star and tree ornaments, miniature felted mittens and socks and some cute-as-a-button ski sweater ornaments in Knit Christmas Stockings, 2nd Edition: 19 Patterns for Stockings & Ornaments - and it isn't too late to produce a few of these attractive projects for this year's celebration! If you're new to sock knitting, have no fear. Gwen's also included a wealth of tips and instructions about every aspect of knitting that you need to know to turn out these projects, everything from choosing the correct yarn for a felting project and knitting a gauge swatch, to various stitches, abbreviations, how to turn a heel, changing yarns, following a knitting chart and much much more! There are two problems specifically with the Kindle version of Knit Christmas Stockings, 2nd Edition: 19 Patterns for Stockings & Ornaments , for which I have subtracted a star.● References to various charts given in the directions are highlighted in red, but they are for page numbers that do not apply to the Kindle version and are not interactive. You will have to hunt.● There is no Index, so while there is a wealth of tips, techniques and other information, it is scattered throughout the volume, not easy to find when requiredGrandmas $0.02 - These gorgeous stockings and ornaments will keep your needles flying on their way to becoming family treasures! There's still plenty of time to turn out a sock or two!Highly Recommended

Fun book
I needed a pattern for stockings for my pets and this book had wonderful ones, for both cats and dogs. The directions are very clear, with each of the different segments of the stocking getting a different segment in the directions, so it was very easy to follow and find your place again after looking away. Small complaints: if binding was spiral the book would stay open easier. Also, for those of you who, like me photocopy patterns for easy of making notes, checking off completed areas etc., will find some of the color choices difficult. The color work patterns are shown in the colors of the sample stocking, which don't always photocopy well, making following that particular chart nearly impossible. I ended up using a PowerPoint file to scan/rewrite some of the charts to make the knitting work. Since I only knit the pet stockings I can't comment on whether the other patterns had the same issues or not. Even with the color choice issues, I will still use this book again for future projects as the directions for turning the heel of the stocking were so clear as to make the knitting so easily. Great find.

It worked
My grandson asked me to copy a stocking that his aunt had made for each member of their family. They couldn't use the stockings unless they were all alike. The aunt is no longer able to knit, and since they added a member to their family, I said I would give it a try, but when it came to the heal I couldn't figure it out so I bought the pattern book. It worked, with the book I was able to figure what I had to do in order to turn the heal. Thank you

clear enough for a novice
Someone made a handknit stocking for me when I was a baby, then when I got married, my mom made a matching stocking for my husband. When each of our children was born, my mom also made stockings for them. Well, this past Christmas as my son was expecting his first child, he asked me to make a matching stocking for the new baby for this coming year. I am a complete novice at knitting (the only thing I had made was scarves!), so I purchased this book hoping it would help me get through learning how to "turn a heel", and all those other complicated instructions! I'm very happy to say that I was able to make a beautiful stocking using this book as a basic guide ... the instructions and photos were very detailed and helpful, even to a novice like me!! There are some patterns in the book which are more complicated, so I think the book could be for more experienced knitters as well.

Great projects with clear patterns
This is an excellent source for just making fun Christmas stockings and ornaments. The patterns are painfully concise - literally every row is covered. And they are beautifully diverse from the simple and rustic to elaborate and classic intarsia. There is something in here for every level of knitting expertise and for those of you who suffer from "SSS" (Second Sock Syndrome) rest assured that these are all single sock projects with no need for a pair.I have been having a lot of fun with these and find that a Christmas stocking makes a quick and ideal knitted gift for literally anyone as it serves as a keepsake & decoration and does not put anyone in the awkward situation of being forced to wear something that might be well-meaning but not to the recipients tastes.

Vintage-like Christmas stockings
My grandmother knit Christmas stockings for all her grandkids. The stockings had Christmas designs knitted into them along with each child's name. When my firt grandchild was born, I knew I had to keep this tradition going. I looked EVERYWHERE for a similar pattern and finally found it in this book. Somehow, between my second and third grandchild, I misplaced the book! I was delighted to find it at a bargain price on Amazon.com. And I know exactly where it is to knit my fourth stocking this year!

Waste of Money
Some of the stockings are really unattractive and most of the ideas can be found free elsewhere on the net. I haven't used any patterns from the book, so it was a complete waste of money.

Great buy!
The book arrived early and on pristine condition. You had to look hard to see it was not brand new. So A+ for the supplier. It is a cute little book . Very pretty layout and lots of really pretty stockings to makeI've not made socks before so this is a great way to get me mastering the heal turns. And as I spin my own yarn this is a good way to use up all those odd skeins of yarn.

difficult instructions for me
I didn't realise American instructions would be so different to European so I didn't use it in the end. It's probably great for Americans though.
