The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics)

An Irreplaceable Classic!
This is an advanced level text and an irreplaceable classic that is certainly not for beginners. The authors take a differential geometric viewpoint to explain GR and the explanations of the mathematical background are complete and deep. Moreover, this is also a standard reference for the Cauchy problem in GR, which happens to be written by the very person who first proved it's well-posedness. There is a book by Roger Penrose titled, "Techniques of Differential Topology in relativity", which has major overlaps with this book. I would recommend any serious relativists to get that one too since some of the proofs given in it can never be found elsewhere and moreover, it pairs well with Hawking-Ellis' text.Much of the well-known exact solutions to the field equations' physical meaning are deeply explored and what is probably most special about this book is that it extensively uses global analysis as compared to say MTW, Wald, and Weinberg, all of which rely heavily on perturbative methods. Overall, I would say that it's well worth its price and a must-have for an advanced graduate and/or specialist in the field. Although the book is self-contained, the text would definitely not suit beginners since there are very little to no explanations on some of the mathematical theorems the authors employ and also largely due to the fact that there are no exercises.

A must for those who are willing to do some work.
I used this gem as a text at the University of Waterloo quite a few years ago. For me, it was a life changer. I won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to study stellar atmospheres and was doing that at University of Washington when I first read this outstanding work.Although my interests were certainly germane to the large scale structure of the cosmos, I suddenly felt limited in my work. I think this book was the impetus for my change of focus. I devoted myself to general relativity from then on. I found the authors' singularity theorems most exciting. I also believe my extensive training in "pure" maths allowed me to more deeply appreciate the format and style presented here by Hawking and Ellis.I highly recommend this book to anyone with the necessary mathematical and physical prerequisites. This not an elementary text.

A book in beautiful condition
When I took the book out of its mailing pouch, I found it wasshrink wrapped, in beautiful condition. I almost hesitated totake the shrink wrap off, it was so impressive. I had been expecting"very good" condition, so this was a pleasant surprise.
