Helped me take better pictures.
This book is exactly what I was looking for.I have spent a ton of my free time (and money) taking mediocre photos at my kid's soccer, football and basketball games. Over the years, I have read books, attended seminars, and searched the internet for useful and specific information that might help me improve my photos. Most of what I found was either boring or lacked good technical advice or both. This is a cool book w. very useful info. Lots of beautiful photos and well written, it's a fun and easy read. But I bought the book to learn and the author does a great job explaining how and why he took each photo. I've learned a lot about settings, dealing w. light, and where to position myself. My photos have improved and I am less frustrated after each event. Rather than saying "what am I doing wrong" after shooting one of my kids games, I'll briefly flip through the book and remind myself what I did well, and what I could have done better. This book will be a great investment for any avid sports photographer.

The Finest Book Available on the Subject
This is the finest book available on sports photography and it delivers on its promise in every respect. A great value at the price from one of the true master's of the craft. I'm surprised how often I've referenced it in the few weeks it has been on my iPad. One of the great eye-openers here is how much preparation is mission-critical to producing truly differentiated work at this level. Everyone with credentials on an NFL sideline is capable of capturing a good image. What sets Read Miller's work apart is thinking/acting one-step ahead. See Olympic Torch Lighting and NFL Coin Toss images as case studies in this. This is a must-own for aspiring sports shooters. One caveat: The author makes it crystal clear in the introduction that this book was inspired by of a wonderful sports photography presentation that he has made on many occasions It replicates that presentation (that I had seen several years ago) with little in the way of new material. That's just a cautionary note for those others who have seen the presentation and may be hoping for a new take. It isn't a new take. It's still solid gold material and advice -- but its a companion piece to the presentation.Unrelated to the content of the book itself, someone needed to spend a few hours optimizing this for digital reading devices of all stripes. The reader is jarred from his/her experience when the captions to the beautiful photos lag or precede the images by 1-2 pages. It makes a beautiful book feel klunky and uncoordinated. If I had to do it over again, I would have -- and frankly probably should have -- bought the hard over to begin with.

PRM the legend
I finished the book in two sittings (not my style...I rarely finish a book). It was a marvelously fun read. The book was both mentally and visually stimulating, full of photographic advice, real life stories via a career timeline, beautiful photographs, and punctuated with humor. Mr. Miller prefaces his book by saying he didn't want it to be a "coffee table" book of photographs or a technical instruction manual. What he did was perfectly blend all of the above into an informative and enjoyable read. Mr. Miller (over 100 Sports Illustrated covers) has been credited with some of the most iconic sports images and moments ever captured. When the "coffee table" version finally does come out, I'll be the first in line. The photographs throughout the book deserve more than a cursory glance as you turn the pages. Some I simply stared at for a couple of minutes. The humor was unexpected as I found myself giggling (with a few outbursts of laughter) at some of his sidebar comments (page 200..."women runners (all of whom happen to be blonde) take a tumble during the 800M at the 2008 Prefontaine")Whatever your photographic experience (or not), whether you even like sports, this book is enjoyable for everyone. It held my interest from cover to cover...and that's not easy.

Picture Perfect
Touchdown! What a great blend of art and information A lifes work at Sports Illustrated eloquently and diligently explained. Great photos catching the essence of the games with commentary on the story behind the pictures as well as how the pictures were taken and my favorite, the metadata available for the shots when not shot analogue. The pictures could stand on their own and the information could stand alone also but gently marinating the two adds out of this world flavor. I have read G Newman Lowrances book and have Neil Leifers coffee table style pictorial, both great books. I just like the style in which this was written, simple tricks like using a trash-bag to cover your camera in the rain yet sprinkled with technical information when appropriate. I am a mid-level sports shooter that shoots a top #25D-1 college level football team and shot a couple NFL games as well as portraits, weddings, dance studios, and rodeos and local fairs. Can't say enough about this book. I am picking up little tricks and ideas in each section. I am telling all my photo buddies about this book, if nothing else it gives you pause to think about what you are doing when you go shoot a job. Keep clicking!

Great book for Sports photographers
This book is full of great content for all levels of sports photographers. Peter is one of the best football photographers and his knowledge of how to shoot the game is incredible. The book details his thoughts on what you should look for and where the best shots come from during a game. With his experience he has examples of why some methods are better then others. He details gear and tips on what you should bring for ames at all levels. The book details football, olympics and his sports portraits. The Sports Portraits section is insightful and be explains his process and what he is trying to get out of the photos. The photography throughout the book is great and supports the text with examples and detailed information on what his settings were. Great book for anyone interested in getting better at sports photography.

My man who wanted this is absolutely thrilled with all of the content. He loves Peter Read Miller's work and was not disappointed with this gift, in fact it was one of his favorites this Christmas.
