Concise Introduction to Early Modern European History
In this second edition of his 1988 original textbook, Professor Rao updated text throughout and extensively revised a few of the chapters. This is an unapologetic introduction to early modern European history between 1450 and 1815 which Rao has written as a textbook for the beginning student or general reader. While the majority of Rao's focus is upon political history, he is careful throughout to incorporate social, cultural, and religious history into the mix of chapters. Rao's writing style is clear and concise, making each chapter quite readable for students. While each chapter is followed by a short list of suggested further readings on the topics, they can also be supplemented with primary source readings. While a series of maps is included they are not of the highest quality and frankly need to be redrawn. While this is not cutting edge historical writing, Rao never intended it to be in the first place. This book fills a clearly defined role and succeeds at its task admirably. Highly recommended for the general reader and undergraduate student.
