I make quart and half gallon size jars of sauerkraut and kimchi. This tool helps me to get it pushed down below the brine, and avoid mold. I saw a couple of reviews where people said it changed color or got black after washing.This is an all wood product, and just like wooden spoons should be seasoned before the first use. I rubbed mine with vegetable oil, waited 10 minutes, rubbed it again, waited 10 more minutes, rubbed it for a 3rd time and then placed it in a 200 degree oven for 20 minutes.It is now sealed and a rich golden brown color, and washes up easily. I recommend you hand wash it for best results. The dishwasher could break the seasoning. Also, when you wash it, just use warm water, NO soap, and dry it by hand immediately after washing. You can also do what I do with wooden utensils and re-season it once a month.All in all a nice product. So 5 stars and recommended.

Do not buy!!! Unfinished wood, not waterproof! If I could give it zero stars I would. I received the item with a crack a long the side that runs about two inches up from the bottom and a quarter inch into the diameter. This is in no way good for use with food as food, bacteria, and microbes will collect in the crack and make it unsafe and DANGEROUS to use.

I do fermenting, and wanted to make sauerkraut. Was able to push the cabbage down exactly right for the perfect ferment. Turned out so delicious, even my husband who dislikes sauerkraut, asked my to ferment more!!

I don't recall if there were instructions included with the muddler when it arrived, there may have been. Sadly, I didn't check again on this product page before using it. I didn't rub oil on it as instructed and it cracked. My fault, of course, and now I'm disappointed to have ruined it. So, if you purchase this product, make sure to follow the instructions!

If you need a tamper you can't do better than this.

Works great. I had previously used my fist to smash cabbage to make sauerkraut but after I decided to make smaller batches in quart mason jars my fist would not fit in the jar. This tamper solved the problem.

Nice sturdy pounder I use for crushing garlic. A bit pricey but i will get good use out of it. Made Thai bean salad with it.
