Regular treasure trove
Well researched, meticulously organised and clearly written compendium of Scottish folklore. Whether one uses it as a reference, travel companion or just something to dip into every now and then when one needs a bit of wonder and mystery in one's life, it is just perfect and more than worth it.

Fascinating
Fascinating if you're interested in folklore. I really like the authors' occasional humorous comments at the end of a tale.

Three Stars
It might be a great book, but the print is small. I gave up trying to read it.

Fascinating read on Scottish myths and legends
Unlike some other reviewers I'm finding it relatively easy to read this from cover to cover but it would be quite easy to dip into if you want to look for a certain place or legend. The regional maps are big and clear with symbols at the different locations. Great fun to read the entry and cross-reference it to where it is on the map. It also has many line drawings and every so often you will come across a two-page spread on specific subjects like 'Sawney Bean the Cannibal' and 'MacBeth' to name just two. The only minor quibble is that as you are reading you will come across the same fable or creature you've already read which can become a tad annoying. All in all though it's a very well researched and put together book. I love the layout of two columns on the pages instead of just block text. I'm hooked so I'm away to read some more ...

Interesting and informative. Recommended
This is a compendium of stories from across Scotland that gives a flavour of the culture of the different regions through a variety of legends, tales, ghost stories etc.I am enjoying this book which is more of a reference text than a book designed to be read from beginning to end. Good for browsing, even when you just have a few minutes to spare. Very informative and an excellent starting point for 'exploring' a story, area or theme. I look forward to consulting it before and during visits to different places across the country. I congratulate the authors on their extensive research.

Fascinating book
There is just so much in this book: it is very difficult to stop reading. Like a lot of this type of book (Brewer etc), you think you're just going to look at one more entry, and then an hour later you're still sitting on the floor of your living room reading another (fascinating, crazy, historically gripping) moment of folklore. This is really well-written, and makes me want to visit Scotland more. An excellent grab-bag of tales and stories, some of which you think you already know.

Folklore
I absolutely love this book - it's a lot better and more informative than I thought it would be. It groups different legends and tales by region and every so often there will be an entire page dedicated to something to do with Scottish folklore - like a famous figure, place or particular legend. The entries themselves are fairly brief and succinct - almost like a dictionary or encyclopaedia entry - hence the need for these particular pages.

Good collection of tales
Interesting tour of Scotland's folklore. This isn't a study of the folklore, it doesn't look behind the tales in any way but is a good collection of tales.
