Better than I remembered
I had read "Cairo" a few years ago but after reading G. Willow Wilson's latest novel, I was reminded about this graphic novel (with top notch illustrator MK Perker). It has a tight timeline which I like. The main group of characters interesting and flawed yet likable. The setting of "Cairo" is perfect in that it is an city that is old and new with murky lines between. This makes it a perfect place for the story of a drug runner who sells a special hookah to a young Lebanese-American. The theft pulls in the drug runner's sister's journalist boyfriend. Then there is the special agent from Israel who is tracking down drug runners. And of course, there is a jinn.Again, the mix of old and new that creates unlikely alliances. The humor is solid; the romance is light; the politics pertinent yet surprising. The interactions between the characters are engaging. All in all, it is just a fantastic read.

Great pacing and wonderful character building
I love finding hidden gems like this. This is the kind book that once I finished I wondered, "hmm, I wonder when they will make this into a film". The writing is about second to know. Great pacing and wonderful character building. The story follows numerous characters, and the panels and writing make it very easy to follow the complex story. Get it now!

If this looks at all interesting to you, BUY IT!
A wonderful mix of Egyptian folk tales, Ancient Egyptian mythology, and Qur'anic beliefs. This book is a blast if you have any interest in any of the 3 things I listed. Wilson is slowly becoming my favorite writer with this, A-Force, Ms. Marvel, and more. The art is also fantastic and the way Wilson writes the Egyptian characters and their way of speech shows she truly understands what it is she is writing about (which would make sense since she's lived in Egypt for years).

Great story
After reading "Alif the Unseen," I went looking for other Wilson books. This graphic novel does so much so well, with a plot that twists and keeps you turning pages. My initial browse through the opening pages had me finishing the whole book, and I've been back to it several times. Wilson's interweaving of folklore, myth, and modern politics provides a feel for the Middle East absent from all the news analyses on CNN, BBC, or Al Jazeera. And it's more entertaining.

Fantastic 1-shot
Just plain good. Interesting characters, awesome use of myth in modern age, really had that feeling i got when i first saw Aladdin when i was a kid, it transported me into a different world. Would recommend for any fan of comics, middle eastern fantasy or just a good story.

not a graphic novel reader
i'm not a graphic novel reader. i didn't grow reading them and this was one of the first ones i ever read. I was drawn to the author since reading her memoir and following completion, i wanted to read more. this was an awesome journey, i would encourage others to read her graphic novel "Air" that comes in parts. it was innovative as well. oh and don't forget her book Alif the Unseen!

A spectacular journey into an amazing city
We all know that Cairo is one of the most amazing cities in the world, and this graphic novel takes you even futher into the magical atmosphere it holds. And the other most amazing part of this pook is that it follows several different characters, all stuck in their dangerous situations. The novel is a bit short, but incredible none of the less. I recommend it to anybody who's seeking adventure in reading.

Step into the Streets of Cairo
I thoroughly enjoyed this vividly illustrated jaunt with a djinni and assorted other characters through the streets of Cairo. Perker's drawings are captivating and entertaining and Wilson's text synchs beautifully. Having studied the Middle Eastern culture of the djinn and written about it in "A Genie in the House of Saud," I highly recommend this book. --KF Zuzulo

Breathless chaos like Cairo itself
As a current resident of Cairo, I can state without fear of contradiction that the author has caught the spirit of the city in this tale. The energetic, racing, unpredictable, polluted, noisy, good-natured, sometimes dangerous, mixed up spirit of the capital. And like Cairo the story throws together Pharaonic mythology, the "Tales of 1,001 Nights", Islam, gangsters, drugs and contemporary politics. It's not necessarily a very coherent mixture but it is an entertaining one.So, if you're not lucky enough to live here, you could do worse than live it vicariously through this story. Go on, take a chance.

An oasis in the crowded graphic novels
In a graphic novel world that full with violence and gorry stuff, this book offers an alternative. It offers a fantasy-adventure that rooted from Egyptian beliefs and Islamic teachings, and told from a Westerner point of view. The story is beautifully written that makes all the serendipities make sense and not overdone. The illustration is very clear, each character is distinct from the others. It's a nice and light reading but still meaningful.

Ambitious but a bit short
Good read. The art is very nice. I couldn't help but feel that the author was rushed because some of the progression happened very rapidly.
