Disco, Soul or Funk?
This is either a 4 star, 5 star or like me somewhere in between, dependant on your point of view. As with most vinyl masterpieces CDs the lines between Disco, soul and funk are blurred, but I am reviewing this as a soul lover. In the past the masterpiece CDs series have generally been geared towards the electro funky disco, with only 2 or three tracks that could be classed as soul or funk. So why did I buy vol 16. Well first of all there are 5 tracks that I like being the very hard to get Black, White and co and McFadden and Whitehead. And the best for me Bar-Kay's, The Dazz Band and Conway and Temple all of which should have been top 20 hits in the 80's. Then there are four tracks that are great to listen to. Which are Stanley Clarke the very funky Charisse and Woods Empire and at a push Charles Earland. The rest of the cd is the usual electro stuff that vinyl masterpiece are known for which really spoils the flow of the cd. However by programming the 9 good tracks this makes for over 30 mins of good Funky Soul/ listenable disco. Well worth the £10 price tag. Not as good as the Nighttime Lovers 19 cd hence the 4 stars but still worth a punt especially for the hard to get Conway and Temple, Barkays and the E,W&F sounding Dazz Band!
