"In the Wonderland of Numbers " by Shakuntala Devi
I want to give a book to my niece as a gift. The intention is to give encouragement to a niece who is afraid of Maths.Neha in the story is afraid of numbers & she will meet numbers her selfthus, her fear will disappear.Good news: it has a happy ending.Bad news: before you'll get to the fun part of numbers, In the Wonderland of Numbers the reader will be confronted with a culture shock if not horror (depends on the age).Neha's mother in the story is not encouraging. She belittles her own child...She (Neha)brings shame to the family,...Cruel even!(..."She would pull angrily Neha's hair, when she sat down to apply oil.".... "My mother too scolds me & slaps me because of my low marks in Maths)Neha's teacher humiliates her a number of times which lead her to be afraid of Mathsbut the teacher in the story, her way of discipline is child cruelty(...a figure swooped into the room and a series of sharpslaps rained on the back & shoulder...."Wretched girl!.)For non-hindu or Indian one will encounter words such as:appamsPillaiyarkolamrangoliIn some chapters, however, the author has words of wisdom:"It is important to approach Maths only in a Spirit of wisdom.""Any person with average intelligence can master the science of Mathematics."The book is written for Indians in India. There are many Indians around the world now,but I think they adapt to the country they live in.I don't know how Indians in the western world will say about this.Either the author has to revise her book for international readers orwrite a friendly foreword for non-indian cultures/readers.
