There is a range and richness to numbers. They can come alive, cease to be symbols written on a black board and lead the reader into a world of intellectual adventure where calculations are thrilling. In Figuring: The Joy of Numbers, Shakuntala Devi dramatizes the endless fascination of numbers and their ability to amaze and entertain. She offers easy-to-learn short cuts on how to add long columns in your head, multiply, divide and find square roots quickly, almost magically. Fractions, decimals and compound interest become clear and easy to deal with. The author takes delight in working out huge problems mentally and sometimes even faster than computers. In Figuring she shares her secrets with you. Review: Very good - Good book to children Review: NICE PRODUCT GOOD QUALITY - NICE PRODUCT GOOD QUALITY

Great book
This is really a great book. Give great info about the how and why of how numbers work. For a person who never was very good at math this book has taught me so much and boosted my confidence with math.

A blast from the past
My parents bought me the first edition of this book back in the 70s after Shakuntala Devi appeared on the BBC's Blue Peter. I still must have it somewhere stored in a box. So after maybe 50 years, a successful career and two young kids I bought this reprint. It's as fresh as the day I first got my hands on it in the 70s. Delightfully written and a superb introduction to numbers for children and anyone else who is interested.

J'adore les maths et en particulier le calcul mental excellent pour les neurones. Cet ouvrage permet de le renforcer par des moyens mnémotechniques.

Applied some techniques after the first couple of chapters!
This is a fun read so far - I've been able to apply some estimation techniques after just the first few pages. This is a fun way to get more efficient at figuring. Her own joy for numbers and mental number manipulation techniques comes shining through. I had to wait a long time for the book to come into stock... it was worth the wait.
