multiply your reading by 2000lbs!
its tons per sqft, so 1.0 is 2,000psf, 1.5 is 3,000psf, 2 is 4,000psf. works great

Good quality Pocket Penetrometer
I use this in a class I teach on soils. I have the students use it on Styrofoam which gives readings similar to common soil without the mess.

It works...
With soils engineers there is not a lot of use for this for the average Joe. I use it when teaching excavation safety classes.

Used to determine footing size needed
Useful. Quick tests showed our soil had a much lower bearing capacity than anticipated and required wider footings.

Worked great for determining soil classification
The Army Corps always assumes Class C soil causing a lot of extra cost when trenching. I was able to prove that our soil was class A and did not require benching or shoring. A pocket penetrometer is authorized by Army Corps EM 385-1-1 and OSHA.
