I wasn't a reader before this series!
Finally one of those "can't put it down" book series! I fell in love with this writing style and actually wanted to read every night. Can't say I've ever experienced that before. These books are a game changer. Very creepy and just gory enough. If you need a little more Halloween in your life, order these now.

Inaspettatamente piacevole

A very welcomed surprise!
I am not very articulate. Let's just jump straight into it. I accidentally ordered "The Curse of the Wendigo," by Rick Yancey. In my ignorance, I thought it was a rendering on the psychology and historical significance of the Wendigo in Native cultures. Upon arrival...the realization sunk in and a mistake was made, but why not read it anyway, eh? Turns out, I absolutely loved the book, which subsequently lead me to purchasing the whole series.Exceptionally well written. Mr. Yancey clearly does his homework to provide historical context behind all things dark that go bump in the night. As some reviewers noted, I don't see why this is labeled "YA"; these books most definitely cater to all audiences. I would like to go into more detail but rather not put forth any spoilers. 5 stars, A+...I plan on reading the series again.

Beautifully disturbing or disturbingly beautiful?
A beautifully written and super creepy horror series that will seriously scare the pants right off of you. Like the best monster novels, the Monstrumologist series illuminates the strengths and weaknesses inherent in humanity by comparing humans with actual monsters. As someone who does not usually get into the horror genre, I found Yancey's series to be engrossing and perpetually scary. There is a LOT of gore - be forewarned, especially in the first two books. And he does utilize the jump-scare tactic a couple of times, to extremely good effect. It's easy to spot a good horror writer when your mind is plagued for days afterwards with visions of wendigos and anthropomorphi.Even though the series is written from the point of view of a 12-year-old boy, set in New England during the latter half of the nineteenth century, I would strongly caution younger readers. The gore is one thing, but there are some pretty disturbing scenes. (The captain's tale in the first book, anyone???) In addition, the author makes use of his nineteenth century time setting by utilizing a lot of Victorian-era language - I was pleased at being able to discover new words, but for anyone who doesn't like reaching for a dictionary every fifth page or so, this may not be the read for you. Also, for those of you history buffs, you will be tickled pink to see various famous figures featured in the books - like Jack the Ripper. The paperback series itself is nicely encased in a collector's box, as featured. My books came in pristine condition, which honestly has been a bit unusual for Amazon as of late, so I was happy to not have to send a box set back for once due to crushed spines and ripped pages.

Captivating and unique.
I picked this book by chance from the library and I don't regret it. I had to buy it for my collection at home. It is well written and captivating. It is a unique story line that will keep you reading nonstop until it's over.
